Its procedure is as follows: In a village or town that is secure, abundant in food, where the people, the king, physicians, and brāhmaṇas are righteous and faithful, and where great medicines, ghee, milk, wholesome food, and accessories are easily obtainable, in the northeastern direction, on ground sloping towards the east or north, in an area with well-divided recreational spaces, one should cause a cottage to be built. It should have thick, firm, and well-plastered walls, be well-proportioned in height and width, possess small windows, three concentric chambers, be comfortable in all seasons, free of drafts yet ventilated in one part, with its door facing east or north, surrounded by śamī, vilva, and latex-bearing trees, inaccessible to disagreeable sensory objects, wind, sun, dust, smoke, sweat, moisture, biting insects, mosquitoes, reptiles, wild beasts, children, women, servants, and low-caste persons, and provided with excellent physicians, attendants, and implements nearby.
