The increase and decrease of substances having heavy, light, cold, hot, unctuous, dry, and other [qualities] occur through similarity and difference, as has been said: 'By habitual use of heavy [substances], an increase of heavy ones occurs, and a decrease of light ones; and likewise in the case of the others.' This intrinsic nature of existents is eternal, and so is the specific characteristic of substances such as earth; but substances and qualities exist as both eternal and non-eternal.
