Or one should drink [bark] from pomegranate rind and kurchi combined with buttermilk;
these two formulations are known as great astringents in diarrhoea. // 417
The famed, illustrious Aśvins, best of physicians,
[taught] a formulation for sufferers of bleeding disorders, / for piles, and in fevered persons, // 418
The best [formulation] which was declared formerly by Brahmā to Indra:
sandalwood, nalada, lodhra, vetiver, lotus filaments, // 419
Ironwood flower, bael, bhadramustā, and sugar,
hirivera, pāṭhā, the fruit and bark of kurchi, // 420
Ginger, along with ativiṣā, dhātakī, along with rasāñjana,
mango stone, jambu kernel stone, and silk-cotton gum, // 421
Blue water lily, samaṅgā, cardamom, and pomegranate rind—
one should make equal parts of these twenty-four. // 422
Combined with rice water, one should have him drink it with honey;
it is beneficial for sufferers of bleeding disorders, piles, and in fevered persons. // 423
And one should give it to those afflicted by fainting and darkness of vision,
and to those tormented by thirst, / for diarrhoea, vomiting, and menstrual retention in women. // 424
The formulation approved by the Aśvins cures bleeding disorders;
and it is declared to be the best for arresting threatened miscarriages. // 425
The Aśvins' formulation for sufferers of bleeding disorders: 12 verses.
Curds, clarified butter, sesame oil, ginger, and treacle,
honey, and jujube powder: having stirred all together, one should have him drink it. // 426
This formulation for dysentery forcibly turns back [the disease],
like the wind checks [an obstructed river torrent] resembling a bower of creepers. // 427
Or a paste of jujube leaves, or likewise of chebulic myrobalan and lodhra,
combined with wood-apple juice, with honey, one should drink with curds. // 428
Overcome by the pain of dysentery,
[…] one should drink [ghee] prepared with pigeon-pea root; / having fumigated the clarified butter when strained, one should cook it again: it pacifies fierce pain. // 429
In dysentery, having ground cucumber seeds, one should drink [them] with rice and coriander. // 430a
