II. Fol. 2: Bower manuscript
Sugar candy, bamboo manna, long pepper, greater cardamom, and cinnamon, / each doubled successively after the last, one should make [the patient] lick with honey and clarified butter, // 25
or one should have them eat it powdered, dispelling asthma, cough, and phlegm humour, / for one suffering from side pain, low digestive fire, numb tongue, and anorexia. // 26
[Formula] named Vardhamānaka powder.
With equal parts of ṣaḍī, puṣkara, jīvantī, coraka, aguru, and dry ginger, / long pepper, musta, surasā, cinnamon, cardamom, and udīcya, // 27
and powder of tāmalakī; the sugar should be eight times as much as that. / It dispels asthma, cough, and fever, and destroys pain in the sides and heart. // 28
[Formula] named Ṣaḍyādika powder.
Asafoetida, three pungents, pāṭhā, havuṣā, abhayā, ṣaḍī, / ajamodā, ajagandhā, tintiḍīka, amblavetasa, // 29
pomegranate, puṣkara, coriander, cumin, citraka, sweet flag, / the two alkalis, the two salts, and cavya—these one should powder together. // 30
This powder should be administered with food and drink harmlessly; / or it should be drunk before meals, with food or with hot water, // 31
for pains in the sides, heart, and bladder, in abdominal lump prominent in wind and phlegm humours, / in disorders of the duodenum and piles, in spleen [disease], jaundice, [and] anorexia, // 32
in abdominal distension, dysuria, and pains in the female genitals and anus, / in chest constriction, cough, hiccup, asthma, and throat obstruction. // 33
Or this powder, macerated many times with the juice of citron, / should be made into pills of one karṣa weight or even more. // 34
[Formula] named citron pills.
Three pungents, tiktakarohiṇī, barley, chirata, and indrayava— / these should be in equal parts, but citraka should be double, and bark of kuṭaja sixteen parts. // 35
A man should drink half a pala [of this], ground very fine, combined with cool water, together with jaggery, / [for] fever, urinary disorder, edemas, anorexia, abnormal menses, abdominal lump, and also anemia; // 36
and whatever other diseases arise accompanied by bile and phlegm humours in intensely afflicted men, / this powder, when administered, conquers them all; favoured by Ātreya, this excellent [powder] called Laguḍa. // 37
[Formula] named Laguḍa powder.
Three parts of three myrobalans, three parts of three pungents, / [one part each] of citraka, mustā, and viḍaṅga, and there should be nine parts of iron [powder]. // 38
This Navāyasa powder dispels anemia and edema. // 39a
Rāsnā, along with sauvarcala salt, bhadramustā, soot from the house, three pungents, / barley alkali, and ṣaḍī—equal parts, made into a powder, should be prepared. // 40
Soother of throat diseases.
Rasāñjana, dāruharidrā bark, and likewise tejavatī along with long pepper— / a wise person should take equal, weighed parts, grind them with water, and store them as pills. // 41
It pacifies [disorders of] blood, inflammation of the mouth, throat obstruction, and throat phlegmon. // 42
Pill that cures mouth diseases.
One kuḍava measure of three myrobalans, and one kuḍava measure of long pepper, / and two kuḍava measures composed of viḍaṅga and black pepper combined, // 43
and one pala measure each of dantī and citraka, / one pala measure of granthika, [that is] pippalī root, and one pala measure of kuṣṭha, // 44
and two pala measures of dry ginger […]; / and those [substances] to be ground, half a pala measure each, understand them: // 45
rāsnā, balā, gokṣuraka, liquorice, and devadāru, / sweet flag, prativiṣā, pāṭhā, musta, kaṭukarohiṇī, // 46
kaṭphala, the two śārivās, the two śyāmās, bhallātaka, / punarnavā, tejavatī, cinnamon, patra, śatāvarī, // 47
nicula, trivṛt, bhārgī, and the fruit and bark of kuṭaja. / One should make this store of medicinal herbs into a fine powder. // 48
Whatever the amount of this powder may be, the iron powder should be twice as much. / Combined together properly, one should make [the patient] lick it fluid with honey; // 49
and one should follow with milk, properly taken, subsisting on milk without solid food. / This, known as the Ayorajīya, is a perfected rejuvenator. // 50
By use for a year, one lives a hundred years; / by [consuming] the substances for a month, a person would live a hundred autumns. // 51
It slays severe edema as Indra's thunderbolt does a tree, / anemia, also piles, sluggish digestive fire, and worms, // 52
fistula-in-ano, jaundice, skin diseases, abdominal enlargements, / spleen [disease], abdominal lumps, epilepsy, pains, and cutting pain in the rectum. // 53
For whichever disorder this Ayorajī is employed, / it indeed slays them at once, as the thunderbolt does the enemies of the gods. // 54
The accompanying intake should be parched grain flour mixed with honey.
