brahmahatyā surāpānaṃ steyaṃ gurvaṅganāgamaḥ
mahānti pātakāny āhuḥ saṃsargaś cāpi taiḥ saha //

Penances, therefore, must always be performed for the sake of purification, because those whose sins have not been expiated, are born (again) with disgraceful marks.
