tapo vidyā ca viprasya niḥśreyasakaraṃ param
tapasā kilbiṣaṃ hanti vidyayāmṛtam aśnute //

Austerity and sacred learning are the best means by which a Brahmana secures supreme bliss; by austerities he destroys guilt, by sacred learning he obtains the cessation of (births and) deaths.
