mātāpitṛbhyām utsṛṣṭaṃ tayor anyatareṇa vā
yaṃ putraṃ parigṛhṇīyād apaviddhaḥ sa ucyate //
He whom (a man) receives as his son, (after he has been) deserted by his parents or by either of them, is called a son cast off (Apaviddha).
