kṣetrajādīn sutān etān ekādaśa yathoditān
putrapratinidhīn āhuḥ kriyālopān manīṣiṇaḥ //

These eleven, the son begotten on the wife and the rest as enumerated (above), the wise call substitutes for a son, (taken) in order (to prevent) a failure of the (funeral) ceremonies.
