atha gorodhanādiviṣayegohatyāyāṃ ca prāyaścittavarṇanam
āpastambaṃ pravakṣyāmi prāyaścittavinirṇayam
dūṣitānāṃ hitārthāya varṇānāmanupūrvaśaḥ

Now begins the description of the penance in matters of confining cattle and so forth, and in cow-killing:
I shall proclaim the determination of penance according to Āpastamba,
for the benefit of the social classes that have become corrupted, in due succession.
