athavā kriyamāṇeṣu yeṣāmārttiḥ pradṛśyate
śeṣasampādanācchuddhirvipattirna bhavedyathā

Or rather, when [penances] are being performed, if distress is seen in them, / purification [arises] from fulfilling the remainder, so that death may not occur.
