"Devoted to rituals" means intent on performing prescribed duties. "Devoted to austerities" means having the character of ascetic practice. One who possesses the sabhya, the āvasathya, and the three sacrificial fires is one who "maintains the five fires"; also one who studies the knowledge of the five fires. A "celibate student" is both one preparing for household life and one remaining a lifelong student. "Devoted to their mother and father" means intent on honoring them. By the word "and" (ca), those devoted to knowledge and others [are included]. "Brahmins"—not Kshatriyas or others. "The perfection of a śrāddha" means the causes of attaining imperishable reward in śrāddhas. || 1.221
