according to this text. A "degraded man" is one devoid of righteousness; his son is "the son of a degraded man." "A woman previously married to another" is a remarried woman; he is her husband. One who takes what is not given is "a thief." "Those vile in conduct" are those who act contrary to the sacred scriptures. By the word "and" (ca), gamblers, temple-priests, and others [are included]. These are condemned—that is, prohibited—at a śrāddha. Even though the unfitness of those other than these was established by the very presentation of qualified Brahmins through the phrase "the foremost in all the Vedas" and so forth, the restatement of the prohibition of certain men such as the diseased is for the sake of obtaining those who are free of prohibitions when Brahmins of the stated qualifications are unavailable. || 1.224
