Having brought to completion—that is, having finished—according to the method previously stated, the Veda consisting of mantra and brāhmaṇa, or the observances consisting of the duties of a student of the Veda enumerated before, or both, he should give to the previously mentioned teacher the desired gift according to his ability and then take the ceremonial bath. If he is unable [to pay], he may do so with the teacher's permission even without giving the gift. The distribution among these options depends on capability, time, and so forth.
