sakṛd eva kanyā pradīyate iti śāstraniyamaḥ | atas tāṃ dattvā apaharan kanyāṃ cauravad daṇḍyaḥ |
It is a rule of scripture that a maiden is given once only. Therefore, one who takes away the maiden after having given her is to be punished like a thief.
