tapas taptvāsṛjad brahmā brāhmaṇān vedaguptaye |
tṛptyarthaṃ pitṛdevānāṃ dharmasaṃrakṣaṇāya ca ||
Having performed ascetic penance, Brahmā created Brahmins for the preservation of the Veda,
for the satisfaction of the ancestors and the gods, and for the protection of duty.
