The word 'or' (vā) looks forward to the option to be stated: "or all may be equal sharers". Or, all—beginning with the eldest—should be made recipients of equal shares. And this unequal partition relates to self-acquired property; but with respect to property inherited from the father, since equal ownership will be stated, an unequal partition by mere will is not proper. The phrase "if a father makes a partition" marks one time: when the father has a desire for partition. Another time is even while the father is living: when he is free from desire for wealth, when intercourse has ceased, and the mother has ceased to menstruate, then even without the father's desire, partition takes place solely by the desire of the sons.
