vārāṇasī paraṃ tīrthaṃ gauryai prāha maheśvaraḥ
bhuktimuktipradaṃ puṇyaṃ vasatāṃ gṛṇatāṃ harim
Agni said: / Maheśvara told Gaurī about Vārāṇasī, the supreme sacred ford, / auspicious, bestowing worldly enjoyment and liberation upon those who dwell [there] praising Hari.
