stambhaśṛṅkhalapāśair vā mṛte pādonamācaret /
kāṣṭhe śāntapanaṃ kuryāt prājāpatyantu loṣṭhake //
or if it dies by a post, an iron chain, or ropes, one should observe three-fourths [of the penance]. / For [striking with] wood, one should perform a śāntapana; for a clod of earth, a prājāpatya.
