na bhāvahīno 'sti raso na bhāvo rasavarjitaḥ /
bhāvayanti rasānebhirbhāvyante ca rasā iti //
There is no aesthetic sentiment without a state (bhāva), nor a state devoid of sentiment;
they bring about the sentiments by these, and [thus] sentiments are brought about.
