agnir uvāca
ābhimukhyannayannarthānvijñeyo 'bhinayo budhaiḥ /
caturdhā sambhavaḥ sattvavāgaṅgāharaṇāśrayaḥ //
Agni said: / Bringing the meanings [of a text] forward [to the spectators], it is to be understood by the wise as dramatic representation (abhinaya); / its arising is fourfold, resting upon inner temperament, speech, bodily limbs, and external ornamentation.
