bhagavānuvāca
daśāvatāraṃ matsyādilakṣaṇaṃ pravadāmi te /
matsyākārastu matsyaḥ syāt kūrmaḥ kārmākṛlirbhavet //
The Blessed Lord said:
I shall tell you the characteristics of the ten incarnations, beginning with Matsya:
Matsya should have the form of a fish, and Kūrma should have the form of a tortoise.
