124.1

The Essence of the Science of Astral Lore in the Ocean of Victory in War / Agni said: / I shall state the essence of the science of astral lore and other [teachings] in the Ocean of Victory in War, / without mantras, medicinal herbs, and so forth, just as Īśvara told Umā.

124.2

The goddess said: / Tell that means by which the demons were conquered by the gods, / the knowledge [discriminating] auspicious and inauspicious, [called] the Ocean of Victory in War.

124.3

Īśvara said: / By the will of the Primal Deity, the fifteen-syllabled Śakti was born; / from her was born the moving and unmoving world. Having worshipped her, one knows all things.

124.4

I shall proclaim the throne of mantras, arisen from five mantras; / those mantras abide in the life and death of all mantras.

124.5

They are the divine mantras named Ṛg, Yajus, Sāman, and Atharvan in order, / the mantras beginning with Sadyojāta, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Rudra,

124.6

Īśa, the seven-crested deities, Indra and the others, and the five vowels: / a, i, u, e, o, and the kalās; this is declared to be the root, Brahman.

124.7

Just as fire inside wood is not seen when unmanifest, / so the Śiva-Śakti present in the body is not seen.

124.8

First arose Śakti, adorned with the sound of the syllable Om; / from that, O great goddess, the bindu was established with the letter E.
