31.1
Agni said:
I shall explain the protective rite for oneself and others, known as the ritual cleansing,
by which a man is freed from miseries and attains happiness.
31.2
Om, reverence to the supreme reality, the Person, the Great Soul,
the formless one who has many forms, the all-pervasive Supreme Self.
31.3
To the stainless, the pure, and the one delighting in the yoga of meditation,
having bowed, I shall speak; may that speech of mine be effective.
31.4
To the Boar, to Nṛsiṃha, to Vāmana, O great sage,
having bowed, I shall speak; may that speech of mine be effective.

To Trivikrama, to Rāma, to Vaikuṇṭha, and to Nara,
having bowed, I shall speak; may that speech of mine be effective.
31.6
O Boar, O Lord Narasiṃha, O Lord Vāmana, O Trivikrama,
O Lord Hayagrīva, O Lord of all, O Hṛṣīkeśa, remove misfortune!
31.7
With the four supreme weapons, beginning with the invincible discus,
endowed with unbroken power, be the destroyer of all wicked forces!
31.8
Remove the wickedness from so-and-so and bring about all auspiciousness,
as well as whatever fruit of wickedness causes death, bondage, distress, and fear.
31.9
Wear down through decay malevolent sorcery cast together with ill-will from others,
[and] the application of severe illnesses through the contact of diseases!
31.10
Om, reverence to Vāsudeva; reverence to Kṛṣṇa, wielder of the sword;
reverence to the lotus-eyed Keśava, the primeval discus-bearer!
31.11
Reverence to the one whose pure garments are yellow like lotus filaments,
the discus-wielder who hurled the discus at the neck of the great enemy of Hara!
31.12
Reverence to the bearer of the three Vedas in bodily form, who raised the earth upon his tusk,
to the Boar of the great sacrifice, who reclines on the coils of Śeṣa!
31.13
O you whose hair-tips are like molten gold, whose eyes are blazing fires,
whose claw-touch surpasses the thunderbolt, divine Lion, reverence to you!
31.14
To the son of Kaśyapa, exceedingly diminutive, adorned with Ṛg, Yajus, and Sāma,
to you in the form of Vāmana who stride across the earth, reverence, reverence!
31.15
O Boar, crush, crush, O great-tusked one, crush, crush all wicked things,

31.16
O Narasiṃha, named the Terrifying One, radiant with fire at the tips of your teeth,
break, break with your roar the wicked afflictions of this person, O destroyer of distress!
31.17
Assuming the form of Vāmana, with words embodying the Ṛg, Yajus, and Sāman,
may Janārdana bring all the miseries of this person to cessation!
31.18
Fever recurring every day, every second day, or every third day,
as well as the extremely violent quartan fever, and continuous fever,
31.19
fever born of humoral disturbance, born of combined humours, and also accidental fever—
bring them swiftly to peace, O Govinda; sever, sever his pain!
31.20
Eye affliction, head affliction, affliction originating in the abdomen,
shortness of breath, excessive breathing, burning heat accompanied by trembling,

31.23
those diseases that originate from wind, those that arise from bile,
whatever arise from phlegm, and those others born of combined humours,
31.24
and exogenous diseases such as spider poison, boils, and the like—
may all of them go to pacification, cleansed away by Vāsudeva!
31.25
May they all dissolve away through the utterance of Viṣṇu's name;
and may they completely perish, struck by the discus of Hari!
31.25.p1

all diseases perish; truly, truly do I say this.
31.27
Poison that is inanimate or animate, or also that which is artificial,
poison arising from fangs, arising from claws, or arising from the sky,
31.28
and whatever poison originates from spiders and the like, or any other that causes misery—
may Janārdana, being praised, bring all of that to cessation for him!
31.29
Seizing spirits, spirits of the dead, and also ḍākinī spirits,
vetālas, piśācas, gandharvas, yakṣas, and rākṣasas,
31.30
the seizing spirits beginning with Śakunī and Pūtanā, and the seizing spirits of Vināyaka,
Mukhamaṇḍī, the cruel Revatī, and Vṛddharevatī,
31.31
the fierce seizing spirits called Vṛddhaka, and also the mother spirits—
may the deeds of child Viṣṇu slay these child-afflicting spirits!
31.32
And whatever spirits afflict the aged, and whatever spirits afflict children anywhere,
and also those in youth, are burned by the glance of Narasiṃha.
31.33
May the terrifying-faced Narasiṃha of great power, who works the welfare of the world,
wholly eliminate all seizing spirits without remainder!
31.34
O Narasiṃha, great Lion, whose face is ablaze with garlands of flames,
O fire-eyed Lord of all, devour, devour all seizing spirits!
31.35
Whatever diseases, whatever great portents, whatever poison, whatever great seizing spirits,
and whatever cruel beings and dreadful afflictions of planets there are,

bring about the pacification of all wicked things, O best of gods, O Acyuta!
31.39
O Sudarśana of great blaze, sever, sever, O loud-roaring one!
May all wicked rākṣasas meet destruction, O terrifying one!
31.40
In the east and in the west, likewise in the south and in the north, / may Narasiṃha, who has a noble roar and is the soul of all, grant protection.
31.41
In heaven, on earth, and in intermediate space, behind, at the sides, and in front, / may the Blessed Janārdana of many forms grant protection.
31.42
Just as Viṣṇu is the entire world with its gods, asuras, and humans, / by that truth, may his misfortunes indeed come to peace.
31.43
Just as sins perish immediately when Viṣṇu is remembered, / by that truth, may all evil of his be pacified.

Just as Viṣṇu is sung as the supreme Self in the Upaniṣads, / by that truth, may all evil of his be pacified.

Just as Viṣṇu is celebrated as the lord of sacrifice among the gods, / by that truth, may everything that I have spoken come to pass.
31.46
May there be peace, may there be auspiciousness, may his misfortune be pacified! / It has been stirred away by me with kuśa grass sprung from Vāsudeva's body.
