prakṛtir guṇa-sāmyaṃ vai prakṛter nātmano guṇāḥ /
sattvaṃ rajas tama iti sthity-utpatty-anta-hetavaḥ //

12. Prakriti is equibalance of the gunas which belong only to Prakriti and not to Atman, and the gunas are Satva, Rajas and Tamas, the causes (respectively) of subsistance, birth and death.
