arthāśrayatvaṃ śabdasya draṣṭur liṅgatvam eva ca /
tan-mātratvaṃ ca nabhaso lakṣaṇaṃ kavayo viduḥ //
33. The learned understand the characteristics of sound to be the power of conveying objects or ideas, of being an indication of the seer or the speaker and of conferring on Akasa (the sky) its subtle character.
