tasmād yugānta-śvasanāvaghūrṇa- jalormi-cakrāt salilād virūḍham /
upāśritaḥ kañjam u loka-tattvaṃ nātmānam addhāvidad ādi-devaḥ //

17. Resting upon that lotus which grew from the waters in which waves rose in endless series, being tossed by the _pralaya_ winds, Brahma, the first god, did not (truly) make out the real nature of the world or of his own self.
