4.30.13
kaṇḍoḥ pramlocayā labdhā kanyā kamala-locanā /
tāṃ cāpaviddhāṃ jagṛhur bhūruhā nṛpa-nandanāḥ //
The lotus-eyed maiden obtained by Kaṇḍu through Pramlocā, / who was cast aside, was taken in by the trees, O sons of the king.

apṛthag-dharma-śīleyaṃ bhūyāt patny arpitāśayā //
For all of you, who share a common dharma and character, let this slender-waisted girl, / sharing that same dharma and character, be a devoted wife.
16. To you all who are of but one character and virtue and
purpose, this damsel also of one character, nature and purpose shall be wife, with her will completely resigned to you.

18. Thereafter you will, having your mind purified through devotion to Me and having renounced hell (pleasures of this and that world), reach My abode.
4.30.19
gṛheṣv āviśatāṃ cāpi puṃsāṃ kuśala-karmaṇām /
mad-vārtā-yāta-yāmānāṃ na bandhāya gṛhā matāḥ //
Even for householders who enter family life, performing auspicious deeds / and spending their hours in discourse about me, homes are not held to cause bondage.
19. In the case of those who do good deeds (resigning them to Me) and spend their time in listening to or telling My glories, though they are in domestic life, the householder's life does not contribute to their bondage.
4.30.20
navyavad dhṛdaye yaj jño brahmaitad brahma-vādibhiḥ /
na muhyanti na śocanti na hṛṣyanti yato gatāḥ //
Knowing that Brahman which, though ever fresh in the heart, is realized by those who know Brahman, / those who have reached it never fall into delusion, never grieve, and never exult.
20. Since I am the omniscient Brahman itself and (every moment) enter into the heart of those who hear of Me from those that are versed in the Vedas, they do not lose their understanding: they have neither grief nor joy, since they have attained to me.

evaṃ bruvāṇaṃ puruṣārtha-bhājanaṃ janārdanaṃ prāñjalayaḥ pracetasaḥ /
tad-darśana-dhvasta-tamo-rajo-malā girāgṛṇan gadgadayā suhṛttamam //
Maitreya said: / As Janārdana, the vessel of all human aims, spoke thus, the Pracetases joined their palms; / their impurities of darkness and passion destroyed by his sight, they praised their dearest friend in faltering voices.
21. Maitreya said:—when Janardana, the one source of all purposes of man and the best friend of all, spoke thus, Prachetasas with joined hands, rid of all the impurity of Rajas and Tamas at the sight of the Lord, began to sing His praise in faltering accents.
4.30.22
/0 pracetasa ūcuḥ
namo namaḥ kleśa-vināśanāya nirūpitodāra-guṇāhvayāya /
mano-vaco-vega-puro-javāya sarvākṣa-mārgair agatādhvane namaḥ //
The Pracetases said: / Obeisances, obeisances to the destroyer of affliction, whose generous qualities and names are renowned! / Obeisances to him who outstrips the speed of mind and speech, whose path is beyond the reach of any sense organ!
22. Prachetasas said:— Salutation, once again Salutation to the Lord who puts an end to miseries, whose names declare his excellent attributes, who in swiftness surpasses thought and word; Salutation to Him whose course is beyond the range of all the senses.
4.30.23
śuddhāya śāntāya namaḥ sva-niṣṭhayā manasy apārthaṃ vilasad-dvayāya /
namo jagat-sthāna-layodayeṣu gṛhīta-māyā-guṇa-vigrahāya //
Obeisances to the pure and tranquil one, through whose fixed state of self the duality gleaming in the mind is rendered meaningless! / Obeisances to him who assumes the forms of the qualities of creative power during the creation, maintenance, and dissolution of the universe!
23. Salutation to the Lord pure and serene, being ever in His essential nature, on whom the unreal appearance of duality is pro-
jected as long as the mind continues to be. Salutation to the Lord who assumes forms through the qualities of Maya for the purposes of creation, subsistence and destruction of the world.
4.30.24
namo viśuddha-sattvāya haraye hari-medhase /
vāsudevāya kṛṣṇāya prabhave sarva-sātvatām //
Obeisances to Hari of pure purity, whose wisdom destroys ignorance, / to Vāsudeva, Kṛṣṇa, the master of all Sātvatas!
24. Salutation to Hari of pure essence, who when seen puts an end to Samsara, who is Vasudeva and Krishna and the Lord of all Satvatas.
4.30.25
namaḥ kamala-nābhāya namaḥ kamala-māline /
namaḥ kamala-pādāya namas te kamalekṣaṇa //
Obeisances to the lotus-naveled Lord! Obeisances to the lotus-garlanded Lord! / Obeisances to the lotus-footed Lord! Obeisances to you, O lotus-eyed one!
25. Salutation to Him whose navel is adorned with the Lotus; to Him who wears the wreath of lotuses; to Him whose feet are like lotuses.
4.30.26
namaḥ kamala-kiñjalka- piśaṅgāmala-vāsase /
sarva-bhūta-nivāsāya namo 'yuṅkṣmahi sākṣiṇe //
Obeisances to him whose spotless garments are yellow like the pollen of a lotus! / We offer obeisances to the dwelling place of all beings, to the witness!
26. Salutation to Him who is clad in pure cloth of golden hue like the filaments of lotus; we have made our salutations to the Lord who is the abode of all beings and the witness of all.
4.30.27
rūpaṃ bhagavatā tv etad aśeṣa-kleśa-saṅkṣayam /
āviṣkṛtaṃ naḥ kliṣṭānāṃ kim anyad anukampitam //
This very form which destroys all affliction has been revealed by the Lord / to us who were suffering; what greater compassion could there be?
27. By Thee, O glorious Lord, has been manifested unto us cast in misery, this (Thy) form which ends all our troubles; what else could be Thy mercy?
4.30.28
etāvat tvaṃ hi vibhubhir bhāvyaṃ dīneṣu vatsalaiḥ /
yad anusmaryate kāle sva-buddhyābhadra-randhana //
This is fitting indeed for almighty lords who are affectionate to the distressed: / that they remember them in due time of their own accord, O destroyer of inauspiciousness!
28. Only this extent of kindness shown by the great who are tender unto the poor and afflicted beings, O destroyer of all that is inauspicious, that they remember at the proper time that these are mine.
4.30.29
yenopaśāntir bhūtānāṃ kṣullakānām apīhatām /
antarhito 'ntar-hṛdaye kasmān no veda nāśiṣaḥ //
He through whom there comes peace even to the humblest beings who strive, / hidden within the inner heart—how could he not know our desires?
29. For thereby beings become happy; and then seated within the heart of even wretched creatures how couldst not Thou know the blessings needed by us, who are Thy devotees?
4.30.30
asāv eva varo 'smākam īpsito jagataḥ pate /
prasanno bhagavān yeṣām apavargaḥ gurur gatiḥ //
This alone is the boon we desire, O Lord of the universe, / since the Lord is pleased, who is liberation itself, the guru, and the supreme refuge.
30. This is our only desired boon, O Lord of the world, that Thou art pleased with us, (since) Thou art our goal as well as our preceptor showing the way to heaven.
4.30.31
varaṃ vṛṇīmahe 'thāpi nātha tvat parataḥ parāt /
na hy antas tvad-vibhūtīnāṃ so 'nanta iti gīyase //
Nevertheless, O Lord, we ask a boon of you, who are higher than the highest; / for there is no end to your glories, and thus you are sung as the Infinite.
31. Still, O Lord, we would receive a boon from Thee who art far above the cause of causes; and indeed there is no limit to Thy glories; and so thou art sung as the Ananta.
4.30.32
pārijāte 'ñjasā labdhe sāraṅgo 'nyan na sevate /
tvad-aṅghri-mūlam āsādya sākṣāt kiṃ kiṃ vṛṇīmahi //
When the pārijāta tree is readily obtained, the bee resorts to no other; / having approached the base of your feet directly, what else should we choose?
32. When Parijatha is easily (abundantly) found, the bee does not resort to another. Similarly having directly attained the bottom of Thy feet, what other things should we go in quest of?
4.30.33
yāvat te māyayā spṛṣṭā bhramāma iha karmabhiḥ /
tāvad bhavat-prasaṅgānāṃ saṅgaḥ syān no bhave bhave //
As long as we wander in this world through our karmas, touched by your creative power, / so long may we have association, in birth after birth, with those who are devoted to you.
33. So long as we are in the grasp of Thy Maya and by force of Karma wander about, may we have in every life association with those who are devoted to Thee!
4.30.34
tulayāma lavenāpi na svargaṃ nāpunar-bhavam /
bhagavat-saṅgi-saṅgasya martyānāṃ kim utāśiṣaḥ //
We do not compare even for a fraction of a moment heaven or liberation from rebirth / with the fellowship of those attached to the Lord; what then of the blessings coveted by mortals?
34. We would not consider Swarga or even Moksha to be even in any degree equal to the association with those who are devoted to the glorious Lord; and what to say of other blessings of mortal men?
4.30.35
yatreḍyante kathā mṛṣṭās tṛṣṇāyāḥ praśamo yataḥ /
nirvairaṃ yatra bhūteṣu nodvego yatra kaścana //
Where pure stories are sung, from which the quenching of craving arises, / where there is no enmity toward any creature, and where no anxiety exists at all,
35. In the assembly of Thy devotees, purifying stories are sung which put an end to (the thirst of) desire; in their midst (the feeling of) hatred finds no place; & no cause of fear whatever to beings.
4.30.36
yatra nārāyaṇaḥ sākṣād bhagavān nyāsināṃ gatiḥ /
saṃstūyate sat-kathāsu mukta-saṅgaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ //
where Nārāyaṇa, the Lord himself, the refuge of ascetics, / is extolled again and again in holy tales by those free from attachment—
36. In their midst Narayana, the glorious Lord, goal of ascetics, is pre-eminently praised in the sacred stories told every moment by those that are rid of all attachments.
4.30.37
teṣāṃ vicaratāṃ padbhyāṃ tīrthānāṃ pāvanecchayā /
bhītasya kiṃ na roceta tāvakānāṃ samāgamaḥ //
how could the fellowship of your devotees, who wander on foot / with the desire to purify the holy places, not be dear to one who is afraid?
37. When they go about on foot to purify the sacred waters would not the association with Thy devotees be welcome to any one afraid of Samsara?
4.30.38
vayaṃ tu sākṣād bhagavan bhavasya priyasya sakhyuḥ kṣaṇa-saṅgamena /
suduścikitsyasya bhavasya mṛtyor bhiṣaktamaṃ tvādya gatiṃ gatāḥ sma //
As for us, O Lord, through a momentary association with Bhava, your dear friend, / we have today attained you as our refuge—the supreme physician for the incurable disease of worldly birth and death.
38. For, O Lord, by a moment’s association with God Siva, the beloved friend, we are led to day to Thee, the goal and the best physician of life and death not easy to be cured by another.
4.30.39
yan naḥ svadhītaṃ guravaḥ prasāditā viprāś ca vṛddhāś ca sad-ānuvṛttyā /
āryā natāḥ suhṛdo bhrātaraś ca sarvāṇi bhūtāny anasūyayaiva //
Whatever we have studied well, whatever our elders, brāhmaṇas, and aged have been pleased by our righteous conduct, / whatever revered ones, friends, brothers, and all living beings have been bowed to by us without any malice—
39. & 40. What we have done by way of properly studying the Vedas, by propitiating the preceptors, Brahmins, elders by constant obedience, by making obeisance to the worthy, wellwishers and brothers and all beings without envy, by performing rijid Tapas, O Lord, without food, under water, for long years,—all this, we pray, may be to the delight of Thee, Perfect Person.
4.30.40
yan naḥ sutaptaṃ tapa etad īśa nirandhasāṃ kālam adabhram apsu /
sarvaṃ tad etat puruṣasya bhūmno vṛṇīmahe te paritoṣaṇāya //
Whatever severe austerity we performed, O Lord, fast-bound in water for a long time,
all that we pray to be for your satisfaction, the infinite Person.
4.30.41
manuḥ svayambhūr bhagavān bhavaś ca ye 'nye tapo-jñāna-viśuddha-sattvāḥ /
adṛṣṭa-pārā api yan-mahimnaḥ stuvanty atho tvātma-samaṃ gṛṇīmaḥ //
The self-born Manu, the Lord, and Bhava, as well as others whose purity of mind is purified by austerity and knowledge,
even though they see no end to your greatness, praise [you]; therefore we too praise you according to our capacity.
41. Manu, Brahma, the worshipful Rudra and others whose mind is pure through Tapas and wisdom, though they have not completely known Thy glory, praise Thee; therefore we are also engaged in praising Thee as best as we can.
4.30.42
namaḥ samāya śuddhāya puruṣāya parāya ca /
vāsudevāya sattvāya tubhyaṃ bhagavate namaḥ //
Homage to the impartial, pure, and supreme Person;
homage to you, the Lord Vāsudeva, the embodiment of purity!
42. Salutation to Thee, glorious Lord, who art equal to all, pure, perfect, distinct and who art Vasudeva of Satva form.

iti pracetobhir abhiṣṭuto hariḥ prītas tathety āha śaraṇya-vatsalaḥ /
anicchatāṃ yānam atṛpta-cakṣuṣāṃ yayau sva-dhāmānapavarga-vīryaḥ //
Maitreya said:
Praised thus by the Pracetases, Hari, pleased, said, 'So be it,' fond of those who take refuge [in him].
Though they did not wish for his departure, their eyes unsated, he of never-ending power departed for his own abode.
43. Maitreya said:—Being thus praised by Prachetasas and pleased with them, Hari of unlimited glory and power, affectionate towards those that resort to Him, granted their prayer and then retired to His place (withdrew Himself from their sight,) but they were unwilling to lose sight of Him, their eyes not satisfied.
4.30.44
atha niryāya salilāt pracetasa udanvataḥ /
vīkṣyākupyan drumaiś channāṃ gāṃ gāṃ roddhum ivocchritaiḥ //
Then, having emerged from the water of the ocean, the Pracetases,
seeing the earth covered with trees that seemed towering as if to block the sky, grew enraged.
44. Thereupon Prachetasas rose from the waters of the sea and were full of anger to see the earth covered with trees (forest) that had grown so rank and wild as if to obstruct the path to heaven.
4.30.45
tato 'gni-mārutau rājann amuñcan mukhato ruṣā /
mahīṃ nirvīrudhaṃ kartuṃ saṃvartaka ivātyaye //
Then, O King, they released fire and wind from their mouths in anger,
in order to rid the earth of plants, like the dissolution-fire at the end of time.
45. Then, O King, Prachetasas in anger like *Kalagni Rudra* during pralaya, breathed through their mouths fire and wind so as to strip the earth of all roots and herbs.
4.30.46
bhasmasāt kriyamāṇāṃs tān drumān vīkṣya pitāmahaḥ /
āgataḥ śamayām āsa putrān barhiṣmato nayaiḥ //
Seeing those trees being reduced to ashes, the grandfather [Brahmā]
arrived and pacified the sons of Barhiṣmat with reasoned words.
46. Seeing the trees (vegetable kingdom) reduced to ashes, Brahma came to the sons of Barhishmat (Prachetasas) and pacified them with reasons.
4.30.47
tatrāvaśiṣṭā ye vṛkṣā bhītā duhitaraṃ tadā /
ujjahrus te pracetobhya upadiṣṭāḥ svayambhuvā //
The remaining trees there, terrified, then brought forth their daughter
and offered her to the Pracetases, instructed by the self-born [Brahmā].
47. There, the trees that were left remaining were afraid and, being advised by Brahma, they bestowed their daughter upon Prachetasas.
4.30.48
te ca brahmaṇa ādeśān māriṣām upayemire /
yasyāṃ mahad-avajñānād ajany ajana-yonijaḥ //
And on the command of Brahmā they married Māriṣā,
in whom, through his slight to the exalted devotee, he of unmanifest birth was born again.
48. At the command of Brahma they married Marisha (the daughter of Trees). And (Daksha), the son of Brahma (who was born of the unborn Vishnu) was born of her, on account of having previously disregarded the great (Siva).
4.30.49
cākṣuṣe tv antare prāpte prāk-sarge kāla-vidrute /
yaḥ sasarja prajā iṣṭāḥ sa dakṣo daiva-coditaḥ //
When the period of Cākṣuṣa Manu had arrived, the previous creation having been swept away by time,
he who generated the desired creatures was that Dakṣa, impelled by destiny.
49. This is that Daksha who had lost his previous body through force of time and who now on the advent of the *Chakshusha* Manvantara created peoples as intended and directed by God.
4.30.50
yo jāyamānaḥ sarveṣāṃ tejas tejasvināṃ rucā /
svayopādatta dākṣyāc ca karmaṇāṃ dakṣam abruvan //
He who at his birth took away with his own splendor the brilliance of all the brilliant,
and whom they called Dakṣa on account of his skill in actions;
50. The very moment of birth he eclipsed with his natural splendour that of all the luminous bodies and he was dexterous in his performances and so they called him Daksha (the Dexterous).
4.30.51
taṃ prajā-sarga-rakṣāyām anādir abhiṣicya ca /
yuyoja yuyuje 'nyāṃś ca sa vai sarva-prajāpatīn //
having consecrated him for the creation and protection of creatures, the beginningless [Brahmā]
appointed him, and he in turn engaged the other progenitors of creatures.
51. Brahma installed him as the protector of all the living creation and commanded him to do that duty; and he in his turn directed all other progenitors (to do the same work.)
