yathājñastamasā yukta upāste vyaktameva hi /
na veda pūrvamaparaṃ naṣṭajanmasmṛtistathā //

49. Like a person in sleep, the ignorant man knows but what is manifest, in the present gross existence and indentifies himself with the body and other things; but he does not see the past or the future, as he has lost (all) memory of past lives.
