5.8.26
With his heart thus troubled by unfulfillable desires, fallen away from the practice of yoga and from the worship of the Lord because of the past karma begun by himself in the guise of a young deer—for how else could such attachment to a fawn of another species arise in one who had previously renounced his hard-to-abandon sons born of his own heart, since it was directly contrary to the highest beatitude?—the commencement of the yoga of that royal sage Bharata being thus ruined by obstacles, inescapable time, terrifying in its swiftness, arrived upon him as a snake enters a mouse-hole, while he, absorbed in nursing, protecting, pleasing, and fondling the young deer, took no heed of himself.
