brahmovāca /
evaṃ bhādrapade māsi kārtikeyaṃ prapūyet /
snānadānādikaṃ sarvamasyāmakṣayyamucyate //
The glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa, chapter 130.
Brahmā said:
In the same manner, one should worship Kārtikeya in the month of Bhādrapada;
bathing, making gifts, and all such acts performed on this day are said to yield imperishable fruit.
1.130.2
saptamyāṃ prāśayeccapi bhojyaṃ viprānraviṃ yajet /
oṃ khakholkāyamṛtatvaṃ (tantaṃ) priyasaṅgamo bhava sada svāhā //
On the seventh day one should also partake of food, feed the brāhmaṇas, and worship the Sun:
"Om, unto Khakholka, may there always be immortality, union with beloved ones, svāhā!"
1.130.3
aṣṭamyāṃ pāraṇaṃ kuryānmarīcaṃ prāśya svargabhāk
saptamyāṃ niyataḥ snātvā pūjayitvā divākaram //
On the eighth day one should break the fast, eating black pepper, and partake of heaven.
Having bathed with restrained senses on the seventh day and having worshipped the Sun,
1.130.4
dadyātphalāni viprebhyo mārtaṇḍaḥ prīyatāmiti /
kharjūraṃ nārikelaṃ vā prāśayenmātuluṅgakam //
one should give fruits to brāhmaṇas, saying, "May Mārtaṇḍa be pleased!"
One should partake of a date, a coconut, or a citron, [praying:]
1.130.5
sarve bhavantu saphalā mama kāmāḥ samantataḥ /
(iti phalasaptamī)
saṃpūjya devaṃ saptamyāṃ pāyasenātha bhojayet //
"May all my desires everywhere bear fruit!"
(Thus ends the Phalasaptamī).
Having worshipped the deity on the seventh day, one should then feed [brāhmaṇas] with milk-rice.
1.130.6
viprāṃśca dakṣiṇāṃ dattvā svayaṃ cātha payaḥ pibet /
bhakṣyaṃ coṣyaṃ tathā lehyaṃ odanaṃ ceti kīrtitam //
And having given a sacrificial fee to the brāhmaṇas, one should drink milk oneself.
Solid food, food to be sucked, food to be licked, and boiled rice are proclaimed:
1.130.7
dhanaputrādikāmastu tyajedetadanodanaḥ
vāyvāśī vijayetkṣucca kuryādvijayasaptamīm /
adyādarkaṃ ca kāmecchurupavāse tarenmadam //
one desiring wealth, sons, and the like, avoiding boiled rice, should abandon these.
Subsisting on air, conquering hunger, one should observe the Vijayasaptamī.
Desiring the object of one's wish, one should eat the [food sacred to the] Sun today; by fasting, one overcomes arrogance.
1.130.8
godhūmamāṣayavaṣaṣṭikakāṃsyapātraṃ pāṣāṇapiṣṭamadhumaiṣunamadyamāṃsam /
abhyañjanāñjanatilāṃśca vivarjayedyaḥ tasyeṣitaṃ bhavati saptasu saptamīṣu //
Wheat, black gram, barley, ṣaṣṭika-rice, bronze vessels, stone-ground flour, honey, sexual intercourse, wine, meat,
inunction, collyrium, and sesame seeds—whoever avoids these on seven seventh days attains whatever he desires.
1.130.8.p1
(iti vijayasaptamīvratam) /
(Thus ends the Vijayasaptamī religious observance.)
1.130.8.p2
iti śrīgāruḍe mahāpurāṇe pūrvakhaṇḍe prathamāṃśākhye ācārakāṇḍe saptamīvratanirūpaṇaṃ nāma triṃśottaraśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ
Thus ends the one hundred thirtieth chapter in the Ācārakāṇḍa, entitled "Determination of the Seventh-Day Observance," belonging to the first part in the first section of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
