Garudapurana 1.199

The glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — 199 / Bhairava said: / Now I shall explain the Crest-Jewel [divination] for the ascertainment of the auspicious and inauspicious. / Having remembered Sūrya, the goddess, Gaṇa, and Soma, a man should draw:

Three lines resembling the track of cow's urine, or determined by the questioner's words, / or arising from the location of the directions, he should calculate the Banner and the others in order:

Banner, Smoke, Lion, Dog, Bull, Donkey, Elephant, / and Crow is to be known as the eighth; he should place them with their name mantras.

Seeing the Banner in the Banner's position, thoughts of kingdom, wealth, and the like [arise]; / Smoke situated in the Banner's position brings thoughts of mineral ores and brings gain.

When the Lion is situated in the Banner's position, acquisition of wealth and the like comes to pass; / when the Dog is situated in the Banner's position, thoughts of female servants, happiness, and the like [occur].

Seeing the Bull in the Banner's position, thoughts of position and gain [arise]; / seeing the Donkey in the Banner's position, sorrow, affliction, and the like come to pass.

Seeing the Elephant in the Banner's position, thoughts of position, victory, and the like [occur]; / likewise, when the Crow is in the Banner's position, thoughts of affliction and loss of wealth [result].

Seeing the Banner in Smoke's position, first sorrow, then wealth [comes]; / likewise, seeing Smoke in Smoke's [position], strife, sorrow, and the like come to pass.

When the Lion is situated in Smoke's position, mental worry, wealth, and the like [occur]; / when the Dog is situated in Smoke's position, victory, gain, and the like come to pass.

Seeing the Bull in Smoke's position, women, cows, horses, wealth, and the like [are gained]; / seeing the Donkey in Smoke's position, disease and loss of wealth [occur].

When the Elephant is seen in Smoke's position, acquisition of kingdom, victory, and the like [follow]; / when the Crow is situated in Smoke's position, destruction of wealth and kingdom [occurs].

Seeing the Banner in the Lion's position, one should indicate acquisition of kingdom and the like; / when Smoke is situated in the Lion's position, obtaining a maiden, wealth, and the like [follows].

When the Lion is situated in the Lion's position, victory and union with friends [occur]; / when the Dog has entered the Lion, thoughts of a woman and acquisition of a village [result].

Seeing the Bull in the Lion's position, acquisition of a house, fields, and wealth [follows]; / seeing the Donkey in the Lion's position, ownership of a village indeed [results].

Seeing the Elephant in the Lion's position, health, long life, happiness, and the like [result]; / when the Crow is situated in the Lion's position, a maiden, grain, virtues, and the like [are obtained].

Seeing the Banner in the Dog's position, thoughts of position, happiness, and the like [occur]; / when Smoke is situated in the Dog's position, quarreling and ruin of undertakings [result].

When the Lion is situated in the Dog's position, non-accomplishment of undertakings will occur; / when the Dog is situated in the Dog's position, loss of wealth will occur.

Seeing the Bull in the Dog's position, a sick person is released from sickness; / seeing the Donkey in the Dog's position, there will be fear of conflict.

Seeing the Elephant in the Dog's position, union with a son and wife [occurs]; / and when the Crow is situated in the Dog's position, there will be distress and ruin of the family.

Seeing the Banner in the Bull's position, honour from the king, happiness, and the like [result]; / when Smoke is situated in the Bull's position, honour from the king, happiness, and the like [result].

When the Lion is situated in the Bull's position, good fortune and wealth and the like [result]; / when the Dog is situated in the Bull's position, strength, prosperity, and desire are declared.

Seeing the Bull in the Bull's position, fame, contentment, happiness, and the like [occur]; / seeing the Donkey in the Bull's position, great gain and the like come to pass.

Seeing the Elephant in the Bull's position, union with women, elephants, and the like [occurs]; / when the Crow is situated in the Bull's position, acquisition of position and honour [occurs].

Seeing the Banner in the Donkey's position, disease, grief, and the like come to pass; / when Smoke is situated in the Donkey's position, fear of thieves and the like will arise.

When the lion is in the place of the donkey, there is honor, prosperity, victory, and the like; / when the dog is in the place of the donkey, there is distress and destruction of wealth.

Seeing the bull in the place of the donkey brings happiness and union with loved ones; / seeing the donkey in the place of the donkey, one should predict sorrow, affliction, and the like.

Seeing the elephant in the place of the donkey brings happiness, sons, and the like; / when the crow is in the place of the donkey, there is strife and disease.

Seeing the banner in the place of the elephant brings women, victory, prosperity, happiness, and the like; / when the smoke is in the place of the elephant, there is acquisition of wealth and grain.

When the lion is in the place of the elephant, there is achievement of victory and success; / when the dog is in the place of the elephant, there is health, happiness, and prosperity.

Seeing the bull in the place of the elephant brings royal honor, wealth, and the like; / seeing the donkey in the place of the elephant brings sorrow first, and then happiness.

Seeing the elephant in the place of the elephant brings fields, grain, happiness, and the like; / when the crow is in the place of the elephant, there is acquisition of wealth and grain.

Seeing the banner in the place of the crow, there will be destruction of one's undertakings; / when smoke is in the place of the crow, strife and sorrow will depart.

When the lion is in the place of the crow, there is conflict and misery; / when the dog is in the place of the crow, there is danger of destruction of the home and the like.

Seeing the bull in the place of the crow brings fear of displacement from one's position and the like; / seeing the donkey in the place of the crow brings loss of wealth and defeat.

Seeing the elephant in the place of the crow brings wealth, fame, and the like; / when the crow is in the place of the crow, there is travel abroad and the like.

Thus ends the one hundred and ninety-ninth chapter in the Ācārakāṇḍa, designated as the first section, in the Pūrvakhaṇḍa of the glorious Garuḍa Purāṇa.
