sūta uvāca /
prathamo 'ṣṭākṣaraiḥ pādo dvitīyo dvādaśākṣaraiḥ /
tṛtīyaḥ ṣoḍaśārṇaiśca viṃśadvarṇaiścaturthakaḥ //
sāmānyalakṣaṇaṃ padacaturūrdhvābhiradhasya hi //
Sūta said: / The first quarter has eight syllables, the second has twelve syllables, / the third has sixteen syllables, and the fourth has twenty syllables: / this is the general characteristic of the Padacaturūrdhva class below.
1.211.2
āpīḍaḥ sarvalaḥ proktaḥ pūrvapādāntagadvayaḥ //
Āpīḍa is declared to consist of all light syllables, with two heavy syllables at the end of the previous quarter.
1.211.3
dvitīye 'ṣṭākṣaraiḥ pāde kalikā prathamer'kaje /
lavalī syāttṛtīye 'tha pūrvavaccāṣṭa kākṣare /
proktā cāmṛtadhāreyaṃ caturaṣṭākṣare sati //
Kalikā has eight syllables in the second quarter, when the first is twelve; / Lavalī has [twelve syllables] in the third, and as before eight syllables; / and this Amṛtadhārā is declared when there are four sets of eight syllables.
1.211.4
(iti padacaturūrdhvaprakaraṇam) /
sajau salau ca prathame nasajā go dvitīyake /
tṛtīye bhanabhā gaśca caturthe sajasā jagau //
(Thus ends the section on the Padacaturūrdhva metre.) / Sajau-salau in the first [quarter], na-sa-jau-ga in the second, / bha-na-bhau-ga in the third, and sa-ja-sau-jagau in the fourth:
1.211.5
pūrvavatsyātsaurabhakaṃ tṛtīye 'ghrau ranau bhagau /
lalitañcādgatāvatsyātṛtīyeṃ'ghrau nanau sasau //
As before, Saurabhaka has ra, na, bha, and a heavy syllable in the third foot; / Lalita is like the preceding, but has na, na, sa, and sa in the third foot.
1.211.6
(ityudgatāprakaraṇam) /
upasthitapracupitaṃ prathame 'ghrau masau jabhau /
gau dvitīye sanajarā gastṛtīye nanau ca saḥ /
nau najau yaścaturthe syāccheṣa pādāśca pūrvavat //
(Thus ends the section on the udgatā meter.) / Upasthitapracupita has [the gaṇas] ma, sa, ja, bha, and two gurus in the first quarter; sa, na, ja, ra, and a guru in the second; na, na, and sa in the third; and na, na, ja, and ya in the fourth, with the remaining quarters as before.
1.211.7
tṛtīrye 'ghrau viśeṣaśca vṛttaṃ syānnau sanau nasau //
The distinction in the third quarter is that the meter has [the gaṇas] na, na, sa, na, na, and sa.
1.211.8
ārṣabhaṃ tajarāḥ pāde tṛtīye 'nyacca pūrvavat /
pūrvavatprathamaṃ śeṣe tajrāḥ śuddhavirāḍbhavet //
Ārṣabha has ta, ja, and ra in the third quarter, and the rest is as before. / When the first [quarter] is as before and the rest has ta, ja, and ra, it is Śuddhavirāj.
1.211.9
(ityupasthitapracupitaprakaraṇam) /
viṣamākṣarapādaṃ vā pañcaṣaṭkādi yāvakam /
chando 'tra noktā gātheti daśadharṃmādivadbhavet //
(Thus ends the section on the upasthitapracupita meter.) / Or a meter having quarters of unequal syllables, numbering from five or six onwards, / which has not been stated here, is called a gāthā, as in the case of the ten dharmas and the like.
1.211.9.p1
iti śrīgāruḍe mahāpurāṇe pūrvakhaṇḍe prathamāṃśākhye ācārakāṇḍe viṣamavṛttalakṣaṇādinirūpaṇaṃ nāmaikādaśottaradviśaśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ
Thus ends the two hundred and eleventh chapter, named "Description of the Characteristics of Unequal Meters and the Like," in the Section on Conduct, called the first part of the first section, in the venerable Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
