evaṃ jñātvā khagaśreṣṭha pretamuktiṃ samācaret /
yo vai na manyate pretānmṛtaḥ pretatvamāpnuyāt //

Knowing this, O best of birds, one should perform the liberation of the preta. / Whoever does not show regard for pretas shall himself become a preta upon death.
