pretarāja uvāca /
svaiḥ svaistu karmabhiḥ prāptaṃ pretatvaṃ hi dvijottama /
paradroharatāḥ sarve pāpamṛtyuvaśaṃ gatāḥ //
The king of pretas said: / 'Indeed, by our own respective actions has the state of a preta been attained, O best of the twice-born! / Delighting in malice against others, we have all fallen under the power of an evil death.
