śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam- 27
tārkṣya uvāca /
kathaṃ pretā vasantyatra kīdṛgrūpā bhavanti te /
mahāpretāḥ piśācāśca kaiḥkaiḥ karmaphalairvibho /
sarveṣāmanukampārthaṃ brūhi me madhusūdana //

Tārkṣya said: / How do the pretas dwell there? What kind of forms do they have? / And as great pretas and piśācas, by what fruits of actions [do they become so], O Lord? / Out of compassion for all, tell me, O Madhusūdana!
