vidyāvṛttavate deyaṃ mūrkhe tanna kadācana /
samartho vedavṛttāḍhyastāraṇe taraṇe 'pi ca //
It should be given to one endowed with learning and conduct, never to a fool;
one rich in Vedic conduct is capable both of delivering [others] and crossing over [himself].
