1.131.1

The glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa, chapter 131.
Brahmā said:
O brāhmaṇa, fasting on the bright eighth day in the month of Bhādrapada,
one should worship Dūrvā, the daughter of the Sun, Gaṇeśa, and Śiva with fruits and flowers,

1.131.2

with all fruits, rice grains, and the like, saying, "Obeisance to Śambhu and to Śiva!
You, O Dūrvā, are born of nectar; this eighth day indeed grants all desires."

1.131.3

One should eat food uncooked by fire; he is freed from the murder of a brāhmaṇa.
(Thus ends the Dūrvāṣṭamī religious observance.)
On the dark eighth day under the constellation Rohiṇī, worship of Hari at midnight

1.131.4

should be performed, even if overlapped by the seventh day; it destroys sins of three lifetimes.
Having fasted, one should worship with mantras, and break the fast at the end of the lunar day or constellation:

1.131.5

"Obeisance, obeisance to Govinda, the embodiment of yoga, the lord of yoga, the master of yoga, the source of yoga!"
(The bathing mantra:) "Obeisance, obeisance to Govinda, the sacrifice, the master of sacrifice, the lord of sacrifice!"

1.131.6

(In the worship:) "Obeisance, obeisance to Govinda, the universe, the master of the universe, the lord of the universe!"
(In the lying-down ceremony:) "Obeisance, obeisance to Govinda, the all, the master of all, the goal of all, the source of all!"

1.131.7

One should worship the deity on a bare altar, and likewise Rohiṇī together with the Moon.
Taking water in a conch shell with flowers, fruits, and sandalwood,

1.131.8

kneeling on the earth, one should present the guest-offering to the Moon:
"O you who arose from the Ocean of Milk! O you born of the eye of Atri!

1.131.9

Accept this guest-offering of mine, O lord Moon, along with Rohiṇī!"
And to Śrī, to Vasudeva, to Nanda, and to Bala,

1.131.10

and then to Yaśodā one should give the guest-offering accompanied by fruit.
[Then one should worship Hari as] the endless, Vāmana, the son of Śūra, Vaikuṇṭha, the Supreme Spirit,

1.131.11

Vāsudeva, Hṛṣīkeśa, Mādhava, Madhusūdana,
Varāha, the Lotus-eyed, Nṛsiṃha, the slayer of Daityas,

1.131.12

Dāmodara, Padmanābha, Keśava, whose banner is Garuḍa,
Govinda, Acyuta, the divine, the infinite, the unconquered,

1.131.13

Adhokṣaja, the seed of the universe, the cause of creation, maintenance, and dissolution,
without beginning or end, Viṣṇu, lord of the three worlds, Trivikrama,

1.131.14

Nārāyaṇa, four-armed, bearer of the conch, discus, and mace,
wearing yellow garments, divine, adorned with a garland of forest flowers,

1.131.15

marked with the Śrīvatsa, the abode of the world, husband of Śrī, bearer of Śrī, Hari—
the god whom the divine Devakī bore from Vasudeva

1.131.16

for the protection of earthly Brahman; obeisance to him whose self is Brahman.
Having recited these names, one should pray again for the highest path:

1.131.17

"Save me, O god of the lords of gods! O Hari, from the ocean of worldly existence!
Save me, O destroyer of all sins, O Lord, from the ocean of misery and sorrow!

1.131.18

O son of Devakī! O Lord of Śrī! O Hari, from the ocean of worldly existence!
You save the wicked, O Viṣṇu, who remember you even once and again!

1.131.19

I am one extremely wicked, O God; save me from the ocean of sorrow!
O Lotus-eyed one, I am drowned in a great ocean of ignorance!

1.131.20

Save me, O god of the lords of gods! Except for you, there is no protector!
Vāsudeva took his own birth for the welfare of cows and brāhmaṇas,

1.131.21

and for the welfare of the world; obeisance, obeisance to Kṛṣṇa, to Govinda!
May there be peace and auspiciousness!" One attains wealth, fame, and royal sovereignty.

1.131.21.p1

(Thus ends the Kṛṣṇāṣṭamī religious observance.)

1.131.21.p2

Thus ends the one hundred thirty-first chapter in the Ācārakāṇḍa, entitled "Determination of the Kṛṣṇāṣṭamī Observance," belonging to the first part in the first section of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
