*ṛṣaya ūcuḥ
bahubhir dhāriṇī bhuktā bhūpālaiḥ śrūyate purā
pārthivāḥ pṛthivīyogāt pṛthivī kasya yogataḥ //
The sages said that in ancient times the kings came to be called Pârthiva, on account of their sway all over the land; but how did the earth come to be known as Prithvî? O Sûta! tell us also why the earth came to be called "Gau?".—1-2.
