180.1

vāraṇasyā māhātmyam
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ.
śruto'ndhaka vadhaḥ sūta! yathāvattvadudīritaḥ.
vārāṇasyāstu mahātmyaṃ śrotumicchāma sāmpratam .. 180.1 ..

The Risis said —“O Sūta! we have heard an account of the destruction of Andhaka and now we are eager to know the glory of the sacred Kâśi (Benares city) How did Bhagavân Piṅgala become Gaṇeśvara and the giver of food to all within the precincts of Kâśî? How did he attain the Kṣetrapâlahood and how did he attain the Piṅgalahood? We wish to hear about all these things'—1-3
