19.1

*ṛṣaya ūcuḥ
kathaṃ kavyāni deyāni havyāni ca janairiha
gacchanti pitṛlokasthān prāpakaḥ ko 'tra gadyate //

The Ṛiṣis asked:—How the offerings to the ancestors and the Devas are to be made here by men. They also requested him to explain to them in what way the offerings made in this world reach the Pitṛis in the Pitṛiloka and who is the medium between the Pitṛis and the man who makes offerings. We see that men eat and offerings are made in the fire, how do they then reach the deceased?—1-2.
