ārṣaṃ dharmaṃ bruvāṇo 'haṃ devayāni yathā tvayā
śaptuṃ nārho 'smi kalyāṇi kāmato 'dya ca dharmataḥ //
Kacha said :—“ Why are you pronouncing such a curse on me ? I am going away with the permission of my preceptor and have not accepted you, on account of your being the daughter of my preceptor, and not in consideration of there being any fault in you. Devayânî ! You ought not to curse me who has only expounded the Law of the Ṛiṣis to you [for according to that Law, our marriage would be illegal]. Because you have cursed me, you will never be able to gain your desire. No son of a Ṛiṣi will ever accept you as his wife. My sañjîvanî knowledge will, of course, not be fruitful to me on account of your curse, but it will most decidedly bear fruit to one to whom I shall impart it.”—18-21.
