Śântanu begot, from Jâhnavî, the famous Devavrata; and from his second wife, Satyavatî, the daughter of a fisherman, he begot Kâli and Vichitravîrya. The favourite and sinless son of Śântanu, namely, Vichitravîrya, had died childless, and, consequently, Kṛiṣṇa Dvaipâyâna was appointed to produce a son on the widow of Vichitravîrya. He thus begot three sons, named Dhritarâṣṭra, Pâṇḍu, and Vidura. Dhritarâṣṭra begot one hundred sons, from Gândhârî.—45-47.
