*śrībhagavānuvāca
kṛṣṇāṣṭamīmatho vakṣye sarvapāpapraṇāśinīm
śāntirmuktiśca bhavati jayaḥ puṃsāṃ viśeṣataḥ //

The adorable Śiva said:—I shall now explain to you about the Kriṣṇâṣṭamî Vrata (ordinance) which is the destroyer of all evils. This fast gives victory, peace and emancipation to men.
