purāṇeṣu ca vedeṣu yajñeṣvāyataneṣu ca
na tatphalamadhīteṣu kṛteṣviha yadaśnute //
The blessings conferred by this form of charity cannot be attained otherwise, not even by the reading of, or listening to, the Purâṇas, Vedas, performing sacrifices and worshipping, or erecting temples to, the Devas.—3.
