Īśvara said:
I shall declare another one as well, named Phalasaptamī, / fasting upon which a man is freed from sin and shares in heaven.
76.2
In the auspicious month of Mārgaśīrṣa, on the seventh day, restrained in his vow, / having fasted on that day and having fashioned a golden lotus,
76.3
accompanied by sugar, the knower of duty should give it to a householder brāhmaṇa. / Having made a golden Sun of one pala, / he should give it in the evening twilight, saying: 'May the Sun be pleased with me.'
76.4
Having honoured the brāhmaṇas with devotion, on the eighth day he should feed them milk, / and himself take a meal with fruit, until the seventh day of the dark fortnight.
76.5
Having fasted on that [day] too according to rule, in this very sequence, / having likewise given a golden fruit along with a golden lotus,
76.6
accompanied by a vessel of sugar and endowed with cloth and garlands, / for a year, by that very procedure, on both seventh days,
76.7
having fasted and given [them] in order, he should recite the mantra of Sūrya: / 'May Bhānu, Arka, Ravi, Brahmā, Sūrya, Śakra, Hari, Śiva, / the glorious Vibhāvasu, Tvaṣṭṛ, and Varuṇa be pleased.'
76.8
Each month on the seventh day he should recite one name, / and in each fortnight, while doing this, he should renounce a fruit.
76.9
At the conclusion of the vow he should honour a brāhmaṇa couple with clothes and ornaments; / he should give a pot of sugar along with golden lotus petals [saying]:
76.10
'Just as the desires of your devotees are never in vain, O Ravi, / likewise let there be the attainment of infinite fruit for me across seven births.'
76.11
Whoever observes this Phalasaptamī, which bestows infinite fruit, / his soul purified of all sins, is glorified in the world of Sūrya.
76.12
Whatever [sin], such as drinking liquor, has been committed here or in the other world, / all that goes to destruction for one who observes Phalasaptamī.
76.13
Observing this seventh-day vow, constantly freed from disease, / he rescues twenty-one ancestors and descendants. / Whoever hears or reads it also becomes a sharer in good fortune.
