The sages said: / "O Sūta, the primary creation has been told in detail; / now tell us of the secondary creation and who are the sovereigns of which [realms]."

8.2

Sūta said: / When Pṛthu was consecrated to universal dominion and became sovereign of the earth, / then the golden-wombed [Brahmā] made the moon the lord of plants, of sacrifices, of vows, and of austerities,

8.3

and of the expanse of lunar mansions, stars, twice-born ones, trees, shrubs, and creepers. / Likewise, [he made] Varuṇa the sovereign of the waters, and Vaiśravaṇa the master of wealth and of kings;

8.4

the lord of the world made Viṣṇu the sovereign of the suns, and Agni of the Vasus; / he made Dakṣa the sovereign of the lords of progeny, and Śakra the sovereign of the Maruts;

8.5

moreover, [he made] Prahlāda the ruler of the Daitya lords and of the Dānavas, and Yama of the ancestors; / and the spear-in-hand [Śiva] he made king of Piśācas, Rakṣases, animals, Bhūtas, Yakṣas, and Vetālas;

8.6

and [he made] the snowy mountain the master of mountains, and the ocean the ruler of all streams and rivers; / furthermore, he made Citraratha the ruler of Gandharvas, Vidyādharas, and Kiṃnaras;

8.7

he appointed Vāsuki of fierce prowess the ruler of the serpents, and Takṣaka the ruler of snakes; / he made the lordly elephant named Airāvata the sovereign of the elephants of the cardinal directions;

8.8

he made Suparṇa the ruler of birds, and Uccaiḥśravas the king of horses; / the lion [ruler] of wild beasts, the bull of cattle, and the plakṣa tree of all forest trees.

8.9

Pitāmaha had earlier consecrated these, and then furthermore the lords of all the directions: / in the east he consecrated the guardian of the direction named Sudharman, the banner against foes;

8.10

then in the south the Lord, the embryo of the cosmic egg, made the universal lord named Śaṅkhapāda the sovereign; / and in the west he made Ketumant the guardian of the direction;

8.11

the lord of progeny made Hiraṇyaroman, son of the gods, the guardian of the northern direction. / Even today the guardians of the directions protect the earth, burning enemies.

8.12

By these four [guardians of the directions], the king named Pṛthu was first consecrated upon the earth. / When the cosmic epoch of Manu known as Cākṣuṣa had passed, and the one called Vaivasvata commenced again, / he became the lord of progeny of these mobile and immobile beings, the emblem of the lineage of the solar race.
