With folded hands raised, I desire to ask something. // 5
4.8.14
na nāma yuvayorvedmi vedmyākṛtyā ca kiṃcana ..
I do not know your names, yet I know something from your appearance:
4.8.15
puṇyaśīlasuśīlākhyau yuvāṃ bhavitumarhathaḥ .. 6 ..
you must be the ones named Puṇyaśīla and Suśīla. // 6

.. gaṇā vūcatuḥ .. ..
The two attendants said:

Hearing these words spoken by the Lord's attendants,
4.8.22
atiprītikaraṃ hṛdyaṃ tatastau pratyuvāca ha .. 9 ..
which brought great delight and touched the heart, he then replied to them: // 9
4.8.23
.. divya dvija uvāca .. ..
The celestial brahmin said:
4.8.24
ka eṣa loko 'lpaśrīkaḥ svalpapuṇyajanākṛtiḥ ..
What realm is this, devoid of splendour, appearing like persons of very little merit?
4.8.25
ka ime vikṛtākārā brūtametanmamāgrataḥ .. 4.1.8.10 .. ..
Who are these misshapen ones? Tell this before me! // 10

or who, with impure minds, worship Śiva only once and by chance—
4.8.30
alpapuṇyālpalakṣmī kāḥ piśācāsta ime sakhe .. 12 ..
these are the piśācas, of little merit and little fortune, my friend. // 12
4.8.31
tato gacchandadarśāgre hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanāvṛtam ..
Then, proceeding, he saw ahead a realm filled with joyful and plump people,
4.8.32
picaṃḍilaiḥ sthūlavaktrairmeghagaṃbhīraniḥsvanaiḥ .. 13 ..
inhabited by beings with potbellies, thick mouths, sounds deep like thunderclouds,
4.8.33
lokairapyuṣitaṃ lokaṃ śyāmalāṃgaiśca lomaśaiḥ ..
with dark limbs, and hairy.
4.8.34
gaṇau kathayatāṃ kemī ko lokaḥ puṇyataḥ kutaḥ .. 14 .. ..
O attendants, tell: who are these? What is this realm, and by what merit [is it attained]? // 13–14
4.8.35
.. gaṇāvūcatuḥ .. ..
The two attendants said:
4.8.36
guhyakānāmayaṃ lokastvete vai guhyakāḥ smṛtāḥ ..
This is the realm of the guhyakas, and these indeed are known as guhyakas.

saṃvibhajya ca bhoktāraḥ krodhāsūyāvivarjitāḥ .. 16 ..
who eat after sharing, and are free from anger and envy; // 16
4.8.40
na tithiṃ naiva vāraṃ ca saṃkrātyādi na parva ca ..
they know neither lunar day nor weekday, nor solstice, transit, nor festival day,
4.8.41
nādharmaṃ na ca dharmaṃ ca vidaṃtyete sadā sukhāḥ ..17..
nor do they know non-righteousness or righteousness—they are ever happy. // 17
4.8.42
ekameva hi jānaṃti kulapūjyo hi yo dvijaḥ ..
They know only one thing: the brahmin who is worshipped by the family;
4.8.43
tasmai gāḥ saṃprayacchaṃti manyaṃte tadvacaḥsphuṭam ..18 ..
to him they give cows and clearly respect his word. // 18
4.8.44
samṛddhibhājohyatrāpi tena puṇyena guhyakāḥ ..
Because of that merit, the guhyakas, enjoying prosperity even here,

bhuṃjate svargasaukhyāni devavaccākutobhayāḥ .. 19 ..
enjoy heavenly pleasures like gods, free from all fear. // 19

.. gaṇāvūcatuḥ .. ..
The two attendants said:
4.8.49
gāṃdharvastveṣaloko'mī gaṃdharvāśca śubhavratāḥ..
This realm is of the gandharvas, and these are gandharvas of auspicious vows.
4.8.50
devānāṃ gāyanādyete cāraṇāḥ stutipāṭhakāḥ .. 21 ..
They are the singers of the gods, cāraṇas, and chanters of praise. // 21
4.8.51
gītajñā atigītena toṣayaṃti narādhipān ..
Knowing music, they please rulers of men with superb singing,
4.8.52
stuvaṃti ca dhanāḍhyāṃśca dhanalobhena mohitā. .. 22 ..
and, deluded by greed for wealth, they also praise the rich. // 22
4.8.53
rājñāṃ prasādalabdhāni suvāsāṃsi dhanānyapi..
Fine clothes and riches obtained through the favour of kings,
4.8.54
dravyāṇyapi sugaṃdhīni karpūrādīnyanekaśaḥ .. 23 ..
as well as fragrant substances such as camphor and the like in abundance, // 23
4.8.55
brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayacchaṃti gītaṃ gāyaṃtyaharniśam ..
they give to brahmins; day and night they sing songs.
4.8.56
śrutāveva manasteṣāṃ nāṭyaśāstrakṛtaśramāḥ .. 24 ..
Their minds are set only on musical tones, having taken pains in the science of dramaturgy. // 24
4.8.57
tena puṇyena gāṃdharvo lokastveṣāṃ viśiṣyate ..
By that merit, this realm of the gandharvas is distinguished for them,
4.8.58
brāhmaṇāstoṣitā yadvai gītavidyārjitairdhanaiḥ .. 25 ..
in that brahmins were indeed pleased with wealth earned through the art of singing. // 25
4.8.59
gītavidyāprabhāvena devarṣirnārado mahān ..
By the power of the art of music, the great celestial seer Nārada
4.8.60
mānyo vaiṣṇavaloke vai śrīśaṃbhoścātivallabhaḥ .. 26 ..
is honoured in the realm of Viṣṇu and is exceedingly dear to glorious Śambhu. // 26
4.8.61
tuṃbururnāradaścobhau devānāmatidurlabhau ..
Tumburu and Nārada, both are very difficult even for the gods to attain;
4.8.62
nādarūpī śivaḥ sākṣānnādatattvavidau hi tau .. 27 ..
for Śiva is sound itself incarnate, and those two truly know the reality of sound.
4.8.63
yadi gītaṃ kvacidgītaṃ śrīmaddhariharāṃtike ..
If a song is sung somewhere in the presence of glorious Hari and Hara,

mokṣastu tatphalaṃ prāhuḥ sānnidhyamathavā tayoḥ .. 28 ..
they say its fruit is liberation, or presence with both of them.
4.8.65
gītajño yadi gītena nāpnoti paramaṃ padam ..
Even if one who knows music does not attain the highest state through singing,
4.8.66
rudrasyānucaro bhūtvā tenaiva saha modate .. 29 ..
he becomes an attendant of Rudra and rejoices along with him.
4.8.67
asmim̐lloke sadā kālaṃ smṛtireṣā pragīyate ..
In this world, this traditional precept is always sung:
4.8.68
tadgītamālayā pūjyau devau hariharau sadā .. 4.1.8.30 ..
The two gods Hari and Hara are always to be worshipped with a garland of songs.
4.8.69
iti śṛṇvankṣaṇātprāpa punaranyanmanoharam ..
Listening thus, in an instant he reached another charming [place].
4.8.70
śivaśarmātha papraccha kiṃ saṃjñaṃ nagaraṃ tvidam .. 31 ..
Then Śivaśarman asked: "What is the name of this city?"
4.8.71
gaṇāvūcatuḥ .. ..
The two attendants said:
4.8.72
asau vaidyādharo loko nānā vidyā viśāradāḥ ..
"This is the Vidyādhara world, skilled in diverse arts and sciences.
4.8.73
ete vidyārthināmannamupānadvastrakaṃbalam .. 32 ..
These [residents] give to seekers of knowledge food, sandals, clothing, and blankets,
4.8.74
auṣadhānyapi yacchaṃti tatpīḍāśamanāni hi ..
and also medicines that alleviate their afflictions.
4.8.75
nānākalāḥ śikṣayaṃti vidyāgarvavivarjitāḥ .. 33 ..
Free from pride of learning, they teach various arts.
4.8.76
śiṣyaṃ putreṇa paśyaṃti vastra tāṃbūla bhojanaiḥ ..
They view a disciple like a son, [providing him] with clothes, betel, and food,
4.8.77
alaṃkṛtāśca satkanyā dharmādudvāhayaṃti ca .. 34 ..
and out of righteousness they give excellent maidens, adorned [with ornaments], in marriage.
4.8.78
abhilāṣadhiyā nityaṃ pūjayaṃtīṣṭadevatāḥ ..
With longing mind, they continually worship their chosen deities.
4.8.79
etaḥ puṇyairvasaṃtīha vidyādhara varā ime ..35..
Through these merits, these excellent Vidyādharas dwell here."
4.8.80
yāvaditthaṃ kathāṃ cakrustāvatsaṃyaminīpatiḥ ..
While they were speaking in this manner, the lord of Saṃyaminī,
4.8.81
dharmarājobhisaṃprāpto devaduṃdubhi niḥsvanaiḥ ..36..
Dharmarāja, arrived accompanied by the sounds of divine drums,
4.8.82
somyamūrtirvimānastho dharmajñaiḥ parivāritaḥ ..
placid in form, seated in an aerial chariot, surrounded by those who know righteousness,
4.8.83
sevākarmasu caturairbhṛtyaistricaturaiḥ saha ..37..
along with three or four servants skilled in acts of service.
4.8.84
dharmarāja uvāca ..
Dharmarāja said:
4.8.85
sādhusādhu mahābuddhe śivaśarmandvijottama ..
"Well done, well done, O highly intelligent one, Śivaśarman, best of brahmins!
4.8.86
kulocitaṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ bhavatā pratipāditam .. 38 ..
You have accomplished that which is befitting the lineage of brahmins.
4.8.87
vedābhyāsaḥ kṛtaḥ pūrvaṃ guravaścāpi toṣitāḥ ..
The study of the Vedas was performed earlier, and your teachers were gratified;
4.8.88
dharmaśāstrapurāṇe ṣu dṛṣṭo dharmastvayā''dṛtaḥ .. 39 ..
the righteousness seen in the Dharmaśāstras and Purāṇas has been respected by you.
4.8.89
kṣālitaṃ muktipuryadbhirāśugaṃtṛśarīrakam ..
This quickly perishable body has been washed with the waters of the City of Liberation [Vārāṇasī].
4.8.90
kovido'sti bhavāneva jīvite jīvitetare .. 4.1.8.40 ..
You alone are truly wise regarding this life and what lies beyond life.
4.8.91
kalevaraṃ pūtigaṃdhi sadaivāśucibhājanam ..
This foul-smelling corpse, always a vessel of impurity,
4.8.92
sutīrthapuṇya paṇyena samyagvinimitaṃ tvayā .. 41 ..
has been well exchanged by you for the merchandise of merits from excellent sacred fords.
4.8.93
ataevāhi pāṃḍityamādriṃyate vicakṣaṇāḥ ..
For this very reason, wise men value true learning;
4.8.94
ahaḥkṣepaṃ na kṣipaṃti kṣaṇamekaṃ hi te budhāḥ .. 42 ..
those wise men do not waste even a single moment in idle passage of days.
4.8.95
nimeṣānpaṃcapānmartye prāṇaṃti prāṇino dhruvam ..
In the mortal world, living beings breathe for a mere few winks of an eye, surely;
4.8.96
tatrāpi na pravarteyuraghakarmaṇi garhite .. 43 ..
even then, they should not engage in sinful, censurable action.
4.8.97
sthirāpāyaḥ sadā kāyo na dhanaṃ nidhane'vati ..
The body is ever prone to decay; wealth does not protect at death.
4.8.98
tanmūḍhaḥ prauḍhakārye kiṃ na yateta bhavāniva ..44..
Why then should even a fool not strive for exalted tasks, like you?
4.8.99
satvaraṃ gatvaraṃ cāyurlokaḥ śokasamākulaḥ ..
Life passes swiftly and is ephemeral; the world is distressed by sorrow.
4.8.100
tasmāddharme matiḥ kāryā bhavateva sudhārmikaiḥ..45..
Therefore, the mind must be set upon righteousness by truly virtuous men, as by you.
4.8.101
satkarmaṇo vipāko'yaṃ tava vaṃdyau mamāpyaho ..
This is the fruition of your good deeds; ah, both [of these beings] are venerable even to me,
4.8.102
yadetau bhagavadbhaktau sakhitvaṃ bhavato gatau .. 46 ..
since these two devotees of the Lord have entered into friendship with you.
4.8.103
mamājñā dīyatāṃ tasmātsāhāyyaṃ karavāṇi kim ..
Therefore give me an order: what assistance may I render?
4.8.104
yatkartavyaṃ mādṛśaiste tatkṛtaṃ bhavataivahi .. 47 ..
Whatever was to be done by people like me has indeed already been accomplished by you.
4.8.105
adya dhanyatarosmīha yaddṛṣṭau bhagavadgaṇau ..
Today I am extremely blessed here, since I have seen the two attendants of the Lord.
4.8.106
sevā sadaiva me jñāpyā śrīmaccaraṇasannidhau .. 48 ..
Service [to them] should always be made known to me in the presence of their glorious feet."
4.8.107
tataḥ prasthāpitastābhyāṃ prāviśatsvapurīṃ yamaḥ ..
Then, having been sent off by the two, Yama entered his own city.
4.8.108
aprākṣīcca tato viprastau gaṇau prasthite yame ..49 ..
And after Yama had departed, the brahmin questioned the two attendants.
4.8.109
.. śivaśarmovāca .. ..
Śivaśarman said:
4.8.110
sākṣādayaṃ dharmarājo nanu saumyatarākṛtiḥ ..
"This Dharmarāja in person has, indeed, an exceedingly placid appearance,
4.8.111
dharmyāṇyeva vacāṃsyasya manaḥ prītikarāṇi ca .. 4.1.8.50 ..
and his words are entirely righteous and pleasing to the mind.
4.8.112
purī saṃyamanī seyamatīva śubhalakṣaṇā ..
This city, Saṃyamanī, has exceedingly auspicious marks;
4.8.113
ākarṇya yasya nāmāpi pāpino'tīva bibhyati .. 51 ..
yet sinners tremble greatly even on hearing his name.
4.8.114
yamarūpaṃ varṇayaṃti martyaloke'nyathā janāḥ ..
In the mortal realm, people describe Yama's form quite differently;
4.8.115
anyathā'yaṃ mayā dṛṣṭo brūtaṃ tatkāraṇaṃ gaṇau .. 52 ..
yet he was seen by me differently. O two attendants, tell me the reason for that!
4.8.116
kena paśyaṃtyamuṃ lokaṃ nivasaṃti tathātra ke ..
By what means do people behold this realm, and who dwell here in such a manner?
4.8.117
idamevāsya kiṃ rūpaṃ kiṃ cānyacca nivedyatām ..53..
Is this alone his form, or is there another? Please explain!"
4.8.118
.. gaṇāvūcatuḥ .. ..
The two attendants said:
4.8.119
śṛṇu saumya susaumyo'sau dṛśyatetra bhavādṛśaiḥ..
"Listen, gentle one: he is seen as exceedingly placid by persons like you,
4.8.120
dharmamūrtiḥ prakṛtyaiva niḥśaṃkaiḥ puṇyarāśibhiḥ ..54..
for he is righteousness personified by his very nature, [seen thus] by fearless beings possessing heaps of merit.
4.8.121
ayameva hi piṃgākṣaḥ krodharaktāṃtalocanaḥ ..
This very one, indeed, is tawny-eyed, with corners of his eyes reddened with rage,
4.8.122
daṃṣṭrākarālavadano vidyullalanabhīṣaṇaḥ .. 55 ..
his face dreadful with fangs, terrifying as he darts out [his tongue like] lightning,
4.8.123
ūrdhvakeśo'tikṛṣṇāṃgaḥ pralayāṃbudaniḥsvanaḥ ..
with hair standing upright, an extremely dark body, and a roar like clouds at the dissolution of the world,
4.8.124
kāladaṃḍodyatakaro bhukuṭī kuṭilānanaḥ .. 56 ..
holding the staff of Death raised in his hand, his face twisted with knitted brows.
4.8.125
ānayainaṃ pātayainaṃ badhānāmuṃca durdama ..
"Bring him here! Cast him down! Bind him! Do not release him, O Durdama!
4.8.126
ghātayainaṃ sudurvṛttaṃ mūrdhni tīvramayoghanaiḥ .. 57 ..
Strike this exceedingly wicked person violently on the head with iron hammers!
4.8.127
ātāḍayainaṃ durvṛttaṃ dhṛtvā pādau śilātale ..
Seize the two feet of this wicked man and beat him against the stone surface!
4.8.128
utpāṭayāsya netre tvaṃ nidhāya caraṇaṃ gale .. 58 ..
Place your foot on his throat and tear out his two eyes!
4.8.129
etasya gallāvutphullau kṣureṇāśuvi pāṭaya ..
Swiftly slice open his swollen cheeks with a razor!
4.8.130
pāśena kaṃṭhaṃ baddhāsya samullaṃbaya bhūruhe .. 59 ..
Bind his neck with a noose and hang him from a tree!
4.8.131
vidārayāsya mūrdhānaṃ karapatreṇa dāruvat ..
Rip open his head with a saw like a piece of wood!
4.8.132
pārṣṇighātairghnatāsyāsyaṃ samuccūrṇaya dāruṇaiḥ .. 4.1.8.60 ..
Crush his face completely, striking it with dreadful kicks from your heels!
4.8.133
paradāraprasṛmaraṃ karaṃ chiṃdhyasya pāpinaḥ ..
Sever the hand of this sinner that reaches out for another man's wife!
4.8.134
paradāragṛhaṃ yātuḥ pādau cāsya vikhaṃḍaya .. 61 ..
And cut off both feet of him who goes to another man's wife's house!
4.8.135
sūcībhī romakūpeṣu tanuṃ vyadhihi sarvataḥ ..
Pierce the body all over at the hair follicles with needles,
4.8.136
dātuḥ parakalatrāṃge nakhapaṃktī durātmanaḥ .. 62 ..
of this evil-minded one who set rows of nail-marks upon the limbs of another's wife!
4.8.137
paradāramukhāghrāturmukhe niṣṭhīvayāsya hi ..
Spit into the mouth of him who smells the face of another's wife!
4.8.138
vaktuḥ parāpavādasya kīlaṃ tīkṣṇaṃ mukhe kṣipa .. 63 ..
Drive a sharp spike into the mouth of him who speaks slander against others!
4.8.139
bharjayainaṃ caṇakavattaptavāluka karparaiḥ ..
Roast him like chickpeas with potsherds of heated sand,
4.8.140
bhrāṣṭre vikaṭavaktratvaṃ parasaṃtāpakāriṇam .. 64 ..
in an oven, O Vikaṭavaktra—him who causes torment to others!
4.8.141
doṣāropaṃ sadākarturadoṣe krūralocana ..
O Krūralocana, of him who always casts blame upon the faultless,
4.8.142
nimajjayāsya vadanaṃ pūyaśoṇitakardame .. 65 ..
submerge his face in the mud of pus and blood!
4.8.143
adattaparavastūnāṃ gṛhṇataḥ karapallavam ..
Of him who takes unbestowed goods belonging to others, his sprout-like hand
4.8.144
āplutyāplutya tailena taptāṃgāre pacotkaṭa .. 66 ..
plunge repeatedly into oil and cook on blazing embers, O Utkaṭa!
4.8.145
apavādaṃ gurorvakturniṃdākartuḥ suparvaṇām ..
Of him who speaks censure of his guru, and him who censures the gods,
4.8.146
taptalohaśalākāśca mukhe bhīṣaṇa nikṣipa ..67..
cast heated iron rods into his mouth, O Bhīṣaṇa!
4.8.147
paramarma spṛśaścāsya paracchidraprakāśituḥ..
And of him who touches the vital spots of others, revealing the faults of others,
4.8.148
sutaptāyomayāñcchaṃkūnsarvasaṃdhiṣu ropaya .. 68 ..
drive red-hot iron spikes into all his joints!
4.8.149
anye na dīyamāne sve niṣeddhuḥpāpakāriṇaḥ ..
When one is giving his own [wealth] to another, of the sinful person who prevents it,
4.8.150
ācchettuḥ paravṛttīnāṃ jihvāṃ chiṃdhyasya durmukha ..69..
and of him who cuts off the livelihoods of others, cut out his tongue, O Durmukha!
4.8.151
devasvabhoktuḥ kroḍāsya brāhmaṇasvasyabhojinaḥ ..
O Kroḍāsya, of him who consumes the property of a deity, and him who eats the property of a brahmin,
4.8.152
vidāryodaramasyāśu viṭkīṭaiḥ paripūraya .. 4.1.8.70 ..
tear open his belly swiftly and fill it with worms of feces!
4.8.153
na devārthe na viprārthe nātithyarthe pacetkvacit ..
He who never cooks for a deity, nor for a brahmin, nor for the sake of guests—
4.8.154
tamamuṃ svārthapaktāraṃ kuṃbhīpāke pacāṃdhaka .. 71 ..
cook that one who cooks only for himself in Kumbhīpāka, O Andhaka!
4.8.155
ugrāsya śiśuhaṃtāramamuṃ viśraṃbhaghātinam ..
O Ugrāsya, this murderer of children, this destroyer of trust,
4.8.156
kṛtaghnaṃ naya vegena mahāraurava rauravam .. 72 ..
this ungrateful man, lead swiftly to Mahāraurava and Raurava!
4.8.157
brahmaghnaṃ cāṃdhatāmisre surāpaṃ pūyaśoṇite ..
