Śrī Viśvanātha said:
Know the thirtieth [liṅga], O goddess, to be Cyavaneśvara, / by the mere sight of which one does not fall from heaven. (1)
O Pārvatī, the son of the great seer Bhṛgu, named Cyavana, / that great sage, becoming motionless like a pillar, performed austerity without food (2)
on the delightful bank of the Vitastā for many series of years indeed. / That brahmin became an anthill, covered around with creepers. (3)
Over a great span of time, O goddess, crowded with ants, / the wise one was thus enclosed on all sides like a lump of clay. (4)
To that region, to sport in the excellent forest, / came the righteous Śaryāti, joyful, accompanied by his family. (5)
He had four thousand women as his wives; / but he had only one daughter of beautiful brows, named Sukanyā. (6)
Surrounded by her friends and adorned with all ornaments, / wandering about, she saw the two eyes of the descendant of Bhṛgu in the anthill. (7)
Then out of curiosity, with a mind bewildered, with a thorn, / saying, “What indeed is this?”, she pierced his two eyes. (8)
Pierced by her in both eyes, he suffered supreme pain; / then he obstructed the feces and urine of Śaryāti’s army. (9)
Then, with feces and urine obstructed, the king was tormented; / enraged, the king then spoke in a faltering voice: (10)
“Who here today has done harm to the great-souled descendant of Bhṛgu, / who is constant in austerity, aged, and especially wrathful? (11)
Whether it was done wittingly or unwittingly, speak of it without delay!” / All the soldiers said to him: “We do not know of any harm.” (12)
Then the protector of the earth, both gently and sternly, / deeply sorrowful, repeatedly questioned his own people himself. (13)
Seeing her father distressed, Sukanyā then said to him: / “I saw a certain being in the anthill possessing great radiance. (14)
It was perceived like a firefly, and that was pierced by me at close quarters.” / Hearing this, Śaryāti went swiftly to the anthill. (15)
There he saw the descendant of Bhṛgu, advanced in austerity and advanced in age; / with folded hands, that ruler of the earth made an appeal for the sake of his army: (16)
“Whatever harm was done to you by the young girl out of ignorance, O earthly god, / this very maiden of exceedingly firm vows I give to you. (17)
Take her as your wife; be gracious, O best of the twice-born!” / Thereupon the Bhārgava Cyavana said to the ruler of the earth: (18)
“If it is so, having received her, I shall forgive, O ruler of the earth.” / The ruler of the earth gave his daughter to that Cyavana. (19)
And having accepted that maiden, the venerable one became propitiated; / once the grace was obtained, the king with his army went to his realm. (20)
Having obtained the ascetic as her husband, the irreproachable Sukanyā / always served him with affection, austerity, and discipline. (21)
Then, after some time, O beloved, the two Nāsatyas, the Aśvins, / saw that Sukanyā who had bathed and was uncovered. (22)
Seeing her with charming limbs, like the daughter of the king of the gods, / running up, they both said: “Whose [wife] are you, O most beautiful one?” (23)
That highly fortunate one, devoted to her husband, said: / “The daughter of Śaryāti and indeed the wife of Cyavana.” (24)
Then the two Aśvins, laughing, said to her yet again: / “Why, being such as you are, to a husband shattered by old age (25)
[are you devoted], abandoning him here, O auspicious one, excluded from the pleasures of desire? / Leaving the old Cyavana, choose one of us two! (26)
For a husband, O girl resembling an offspring of the gods, do not waste your youth!” / Addressed thus, Sukanyā said to those two Dasras: (27)
“I am devoted to the godlike Cyavana; do not doubt me in this way!” / Then they both said to her again: “We two are the best physicians of the gods. (28)
We shall make your husband young and endowed with beauty; / on this condition, summon us, O slender-waisted one!” (29)
