those seers, foremost among brahmins, summoned the messengers of Yama and said:

Thus among established sins, no destination is found for these.

6.3.209.101

evamuktāstatastaistu gatāste tvaśuciṃ prati .

Having been spoken to thus by them, they went toward the Impure Hell.
There those denizens of hell were, and they too cried out just as before.

In this manner all those servants wandered through the realm of hells;
even in hell there was no place for that evil-minded sinner.

Then they all, taking him, went into the presence of Yama,
and reported all that had been said by the people of hell:
"Tell us, what should be done with him who has no place in hell?"

summoned his family priest and many brahmins, [saying:]
"One should not observe the Kārttika full-moon at home; this has been heard by me many times.

Therefore, with every effort, to a sacred ford endowed with all virtues

When that statement was made by the king, the best of brahmins

said, "O best of monarchs, upon the northern bank of the Revā
is the sacred ford of liberation renowned as Bhāreśvara, O foremost of kings.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.116

tatra yāmo vayaṃ sarve sarvapāpakṣayāvaham .
evamuktaḥ sa nṛpatirgṛhītvā pracuraṃ vasu .. 209.116 ..

Let us all go there; it brings about the destruction of all sins."
Being addressed thus, that king took abundant wealth,

śakaṭaṃ saṃbhṛtaṃ kṛtvā tatra yuktaḥ sa dhūrvahaḥ .
yaḥ kṛtvā mitrahananaṃ goyoniṃ samupāgataḥ .. 209.117 ..

and made ready a cart to which was yoked that draft ox
who, having committed the murder of a friend, had entered the bovine womb.

6.3.209.118

itthaṃ sa narmadātīre samprāptastīrthamuttamam .
gatvā caturdaśīdine hyupavāsakṛtakṣaṇaḥ .. 209.118 ..

Thus he arrived at the excellent sacred ford on the bank of the Narmadā.
Having gone on the fourteenth day, seizing the moment to fast,

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.119

gatvā sa narmadātīre nāma rudretyanusmaran .
śucipradeśācca mṛdaṃ mantreṇānena gṛhyatām .. 209.119 ..

having gone to the bank of the Narmadā, remembering the name 'Rudra',
let clay from a pure spot be taken with this mantra:

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.120

uddhṛtāsi varāheṇa rudreṇa śatabāhunā .
ahamapyuddhariṣyāmi prajayā bandhanena ca .. 209.120 ..

"You were lifted up by the Boar, by Rudra of a hundred arms;
I too shall lift [you] up, with offspring and with restraint."

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.121

sa evaṃ tāṃ mṛdaṃ nītvā muktvā tīre tathottare .
dadarśa bhāskaraṃ paścānmantreṇānena cālabhet .. 209.121 ..

Having thus taken that clay and placed it on the northern bank,
he then looked upon the sun and touched it with this mantra:

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.122

aśvakrānte rathakrānte viṣṇukrānte vasuṃdhare .
mṛttike hara me pāpaṃ janmakoṭiśatārjitam .. 209.122 ..

"O earth trodden by horses, trodden by chariots, trodden by Viṣṇu!
O clay, remove my sin accumulated over a hundred crore births!"

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.123

tata evaṃ vigāhyāpo mantrametamudīrayet .
tvaṃ narmade puṇyajale tavāmbhaḥ śaṅkarodbhavam .. 209.123 ..

Then, having thus entered the waters, one should utter this mantra:
'O Narmadā of holy waters, your water arose from Śaṅkara.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.124

snānaṃ prakurvato me'dya pāpaṃ haratu cārjitam .
sa snātvānena vidhinā saṃtarpya pitṛdevatāḥ .. 209.124 ..

May it take away the sin accumulated by me as I perform my ritual ablution today.'
Having bathed according to this rule and satiated the ancestors and deities,

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.125

yayau devālayaṃ paścādupahāraiḥ samanvitaḥ .
bhaktyā saṃcintya sānnidhye śaṅkaraṃ lokaśaṅkaram .. 209.125 ..

he then went to the temple accompanied by offerings.
Having with devotion meditated upon Śaṅkara, the benefactor of the world, in his presence,

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.126

purāṇoktavidhānena pūjāṃ samupacakrame .
pūjācatuṣṭayaṃ devi śivarātryāṃ nigadyate .. 209.126 ..

he began the worship according to the rite prescribed in the Purāṇas.
Four worships are enjoined on Śivarātri, O goddess:

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.127

saṃsnāpya prathame yāme pañcagavyena śaṅkaram .
ghṛtena pūraṇaṃ paścātkṛtaṃ nṛpavareṇa tu .. 209.127 ..

Having bathed Śaṅkara with the five products of the cow in the first watch,
the filling with clarified butter was then performed by the excellent king.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.128

dhūpadīpanaivedyādyaṃ saṃkalpya ca yathāvidhi .
argheṇānena deveśaṃ mantreṇānena śaṅkaram .. 209.128 ..

And having offered incense, lamps, food offerings, and the rest according to rule,
[he worshipped] Śaṅkara, the lord of gods, with this water offering and this mantra:

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.129

namaste devadeveśa śambho paramakāraṇa .
gṛhāṇārghamimaṃ deva saṃsārāghamapākuru .. 209.129 ..

'Homage to you, O lord of the gods of gods, O Śambhu, O supreme cause!
Accept this water offering, O God, and remove the sin of cyclic existence.'

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.130

vittānurūpato dattaṃ suvarṇaṃ mantrakalpitam .
agnirhi devāḥ sarve suvarṇaṃ ca hutāśanāt .. 209.130 ..

Gold was given according to his wealth, consecrated with mantras.
For all the gods are fire, and gold comes from the fire-eater.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.131

ataḥ suvarṇadānena prītāḥ syuḥ sarvadevatāḥ .
tadarghaṃ sarvadā dātuḥ prīto bhavatu śaṅkaraḥ .. 209.131 ..

Therefore, through the gift of gold, all the deities become pleased.
May Śaṅkara be pleased with the giver of that water offering forever.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.132

anena vidhinā tena pūjitaḥ prathame śivaḥ .
yāme dvitīye tu punaḥ pūrvoktavidhinā caret .. 209.132 ..

According to this rule, Śiva was worshipped by him in the first watch.
In the second watch, however, he should again proceed according to the aforementioned rule.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.133

snāpayāmāsa dugdhena gavyena tripurāntakam .
taṃdulaiḥ pūraṇaṃ paścātkṛtaṃ liṅgasya śūlinaḥ .. 209.133 ..

He bathed the destroyer of Tripura with cow’s milk.
Then the filling of the liṅga of the trident-bearer was performed with rice grains.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.134

kṛtvā vidhānaṃ pūrvoktaṃ dattaṃ vastrayugaṃ sitam .
śvetavastrayugaṃ yasmācchaṅkarasyātivallabham .. 209.134 ..

Having performed the aforementioned rite, a pair of white garments was offered,
because a pair of white garments is extremely dear to Śaṅkara.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.135

prīto bhavati vai śambhurdattena śvetavāsasā .
yāmaṃ tṛtīyaṃ samprāptaṃ dṛṣṭvā nṛpatisattamaḥ .. 209.135 ..

Śambhu indeed becomes pleased by the offering of white clothing.
Seeing the third watch arrive, the best of kings,

6.3.209.136

devaṃ saṃsnāpya madhunā pūraṇaṃ cakrivāṃstilaiḥ .
tiladroṇapradānaṃ ca kuryānmantramudīrayan .. 209.136 ..

having bathed the God with honey, performed the filling with sesame seeds.
And one should make the donation of a droṇa of sesame seeds while uttering the mantra:

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.137

tilāḥ śvetāstilāḥ kṛṣṇāḥ sarvapāpaharāstilāḥ .
tiladroṇapradānenu saṃsāraśchidyatāṃ mama .. 209.137 ..

'Sesame seeds are white, sesame seeds are black, sesame seeds remove all sins.
By the offering of a droṇa of sesame seeds, may my cyclic existence be severed.'

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.138

anena vidhinā rājā yāminīyāmapūjanam .
ativāhya vinodena brahmaghoṣeṇa jāgaram .. 209.138 ..

By this rule, the king carried out the worship for the watches of the night,
passing the vigil pleasantly with the loud recitation of the Vedas.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

6.3.209.139

cakāra pūjanaṃ śambhorbahupuṇyaprasādhakam .
ye jāgare trinetrasya śivarātryāṃ śivasthitāḥ .. 209.139 ..

He performed the worship of Śambhu, which accomplishes great merit.
Those who remain devoted to Śiva during the vigil of the Three-eyed One on Śivarātri—
