1.1.12.55
prārthayaṃtyāṃ tadā devyāmaruṇādrimayaḥ śivaḥ .. 27 ..
As the goddess was thus entreating, Śiva, embodied as Aruṇagiri,
1.1.12.56

Bowing with supreme devotion together with the sages, Ambikā,
1.1.12.60
vismayākrāṃtahṛdayā nanaṃda nalinekṣaṇā ..
her lotus eyes and her heart overcome with wonder, rejoiced.
1.1.12.61
atha tejonidhestasmādaruṇādriḥ samutthitaḥ .. 1.3.1.12.30 ..
Then, from that treasure of splendor, Aruṇagiri, arose
1.1.12.62
hiraṇmayo'bravīdvācaṃ puruṣaḥ kalakandharaḥ ..
a golden Person with a sweet-toned throat, who spoke these words:
1.1.12.63
prasanno'smi tapobhiste sthāneṣu mama kalpitaiḥ .. 31 ..
“I am pleased with your austerities performed in my places,
1.1.12.64
tejomayamidaṃ rūpamīkṣitaṃ ca tvayādhunā ..
and this form composed of splendor has now been seen by you.
1.1.12.65
kāraṇairbahubhirlokānrakṣethāstvaṃ jaganmayi .. 32 ..
For many reasons you should protect the worlds, O you whose self comprises the universe!
1.1.12.66
tapāṃsi kuruṣe bhūmau kimanyatprārthitaṃ tava ..
You perform austerities on earth; what other thing do you request?
1.1.12.67
mallocanatviṣā tedya tamorāśiḥ samutthitaḥ .. 33 ..
By the radiance of my eyes, that mass of darkness which had arisen for you today
1.1.12.68
aśeṣo hi praśāṃto'bhūttejaso'sya nirīkṣaṇāt ..
has indeed been completely stilled from gazing upon this splendor.
1.1.12.69
ayaṃ tu mahiṣo duṣṭo madbhaktiṃ liṃgapūjakaḥ .. 34 ..
Now this wicked Mahiṣa, worshiping a liṅga out of devotion to me,
1.1.12.70
jagrāha sahasā hyetattasya liṃgaṃ gale sthitam ..
had indeed suddenly seized this liṅga stationed on his neck.
1.1.12.71
anena bhakṣitaṃ tacca nāstikasyopadeśataḥ .. 35 ..
And it was devoured by him through the instruction of a nihilist;
1.1.12.72
akaronmayyaviśvāsaṃ liṃgarūpe gale sthite ..
he felt mistrust toward me, who was stationed on his neck in the form of a liṅga.
1.1.12.73
krameṇa sopi saṃprāpto munijanma manoharam .. 36 ..
In due course, he too attained a charming birth as a sage,
1.1.12.74
māmevābhyarcayandhyāyangaṇanāthatvamāvasan ..
worshiping and meditating upon me alone, residing in the state of a lord of the gaṇas.
1.1.12.75
pūrvajanmani bhakto'yaṃ mahiṣopi tvayā hataḥ .. 37 ..
This devotee in a previous birth, though Mahiṣa, was slain by you;
1.1.12.76
ciraṃ malliṃgadhṛgyasmātsiddhirasyāpi devyataḥ ..
because he wore my liṅga for a long time, there was spiritual perfection for him too, O goddess.
1.1.12.77
śivaliṃgeṣvaviśvāsaḥ śivabhaktāvamānanam .. 38 ..
Mistrust toward the Śivaliṅgas, disrespect toward a devotee of Śiva

na karttavyaṃ sadā bhaktaistasmādvai muktikāṃkṣibhiḥ ..
should never be done by devotees, by those who desire liberation.
1.1.12.79
dīkṣayā rahitaṃ ligaṃ yena saṃdhāryate balāt .. .. 39 ..
The liṅga that is forcefully worn without initiation
1.1.12.80
na tādṛśaṃ phalaṃ datte vajravattaṃ nihaṃti ca ..
does not yield such fruit, and it destroys him like a thunderbolt.
1.1.12.81
na doṣastatra kiṃcitte śoṇācalanirīkṣaṇāt .. 1.3.1.12.40 ..
There is no fault in that for you at all, because of gazing upon the Crimson Mountain (Aruṇācala);
1.1.12.82
saphalā nayanāvāptiḥ sarvadoṣavināśanāt ..
the attainment of eyes is fruitful on account of the destruction of all flaws.
1.1.12.83
tvatputrastanyadānena dhātryopakṛtamātmaje .. 41 ..
Since, through the giving of milk to your son, service was rendered by the nurse to your offspring,
1.1.12.84
tvāmapītakucāṃ cakre vatsalāṃ bhaktarakṣiṇīm ..
she made you ‘Unswallowed-Breasted’ (Apītakucā), affectionate and a protector of devotees.
1.1.12.85
nakṣatre kṛttikākhye'tra tava sannidhilobhataḥ.. 42 ..
Under the lunar mansion named Kṛttikā here, out of longing for your presence,
1.1.12.86
prāyaścittābhidhānena bhavāpītakucābhidhā ..
under the pretext of an expiation, become named Apītakucā!
1.1.12.87
pūjāśeṣaṃ samādhāya bhaktānugrahahetave .. 43 ..
Having concluded the rest of the worship for the sake of bestowing grace on devotees,
1.1.12.88
bhaja māṃ karuṇāmūrtirapītakucanāyikā ..
worship me, an embodiment of compassion, as the lady Apītakucā.”
1.1.12.89
iti devasya vacanamākarṇyātyaṃtaśītalam .. 44 ..
Having heard this speech of the god, which was exceedingly soothing,
1.1.12.90
praṇamya prārthitavatī provāca ca tamaṃbikā ..
Ambikā bowed down, made a request, and said to him:
1.1.12.91
devadeva prasādena tvayānugrahaśālinā .. 45 ..
“O God of gods, through your grace, you who are full of favor,
1.1.12.92
etatte darśitaṃ tejo dṛṣṭaṃ devaiśca mānavaiḥ ..
this splendor of yours has been shown, and it has been seen by gods and men.
1.1.12.93
pratyakṣaṃ kṛttikāmāsi madvratāṃtamahotsave .. 46 ..
Visible in the month of Kārttika at the great festival of the conclusion of my vow,
1.1.12.94
nakṣatre kṛttikākhye'smiṃstejaste dṛśyatāṃ param ..
under this lunar mansion named Kṛttikā, let your supreme splendor be seen!
1.1.12.95

May all creatures, having beheld this supreme splendor
1.1.12.96
dṛṣṭvā samastairduritairmucyatāṃ sarvajaṃtavaḥ ..
seen year after year, be liberated from all misfortunes!”
1.1.12.97
tatheti devadevena proce'thāṃtardadhe girau .. 48 ..
‘So be it,’ the God of gods replied, and then disappeared into the mountain.
1.1.12.98
pradakṣiṇaṃ cakārainaṃ sakhībhiḥ sā tatoṃ'bikā ..
Then Ambikā with her female friends performed a circumambulation of it.
1.1.12.99
ghanaśyāmalayā kāṃtyā parito jṛṃbhamāṇayā .. 49 ..
With her dense dark luster blossoming all around,

she made the liṅga composed of Aruṇagiri take on the brilliance of emerald.
